Morbid Angel threw fans for a serious loop when their long-awaited return featured techno and industrial influences on several songs. It’s not nearly as jarring as most have made it out to be. In fact, the unexpectedness makes the album oddly refreshing, ultimately daring and the biggest surprise of 2011.

Whitesnake - Forevermore
9
Elder rocker David Coverdale came back with a vengeance on Whitesnake’s 2008 reunion disc, Good to Be Bad. However, Forevermore is even better. Armed with a disgustingly dense guitar tone and a slight return to the Blues, Whitesnake has never sounded this amazing. Even the gratuitous ballads are grand.
Crowbar - Sever the Wicked Hand
8
The NOLA sludge-lords return with an expected oppressive offering. But what makes Sever the Wicked Hand so memorable is the sheer sonic magnitude of the album. There was none heavier in 2011.
Rhapsody of Fire - From Chaos to Eternity
7
It’s always been hard to take these Italian’s self-proclaimed Symphonic Epic Hollywood Metal seriously, their last album of some endless saga about… well, bloated storyline aside, Rhapsody of Fire turned up the flair and aggression like never before and it works perfectly.
Iced Earth - Dystopia
6
Fans groaned (again) when vocalist Matt Barlow quit (again). Shockingly enough, Stu Block, destroyed all doubts by somehow channeling both Barlow’s and Ripper Owens’ vocal abilities. Musically, Jon Shaffer streamlined Dystopia into the most cohesive Iced Earth disc since Horror Show.
Symphony X - Iconoclast
5
In the same vein of Paradise Lost, Symphony X’s journey, on Iconoclast, into heavier territory proved to be more sonically rewarding and successful than their previous album.
Ghoul - Transmission Zero
2
These hooded menaces added in a few morsels of Surf and Doom into their pot of boiling Thrash and heads will gleefully continue to roll. Transmission Zero puts a lot of fun and fright into 2011.
Exhumed - All Guts, No Glory
4
Returning in gory glory, Exhumed barfs up pure bile and bliss on their first disc in five years. All Guts, No Glory was definitely worth the wait.
Sinister Realm - The Crystal Eye
3
Traditional Metal fused with heaps of Doom makes The Crystal Eye one of the truest moments of 2011.
With the return of Leviathan Thisiren (aka Harry Conklin, ex-Jag Panzer) to the fold, Colorado’s Satanic stalwarts expand their trademark Blackened Deathy Thrash into unprecedented territories. Conklin rips out a career-defining performance and musically, Satanic Metal has never sounded as brutally majestic as By the Hands of the Devil. This one may eventually be hailed as the second coming of Don’t Break the Oath.
