What a surprise this was. Remarkably tight and wonderfully written, this is a self-released blackened thrash album to compete with anyone in the game.
Mitochondrion - Parasignosis
8
A terrifying and mind-warping album of evil filth. Profound Lore continues to unearth perfectly ugly death metal.
Thulcandra - Under a Frozen Sun
7
Paying homage, cloning, ripping off… call it what you want but what I hear is some of the finest melody-driven black metal in a long time. It’s one thing to just copycat and it’s something entirely different to do it right.
Æðra - The Evening Red
6
Another surprising self-released debut that I just could not stop listening to. A little amateur in certain aspects, but beautifully written and full of conviction.
The soundtrack to being slowly crushed under a thousand tons of rubble. Easily the heaviest and most brutally crushing death metal album this year and probably since the turn of the millennia.
Omnium Gatherum - New World Shadows
2
A band that I never thought I’d see fighting for the top spot on my year end list ever again, Omnium Gatherum snapped out of it and once again showed everyone just how immensely talented they are. New World Shadows is a passionately superb work of art.
An incredibly diverse and surprising release from this long-running and enigmatic black metal band.
Ghost Brigade - Until Fear No Longer Defines Us
1
One night, it just hit me. Until Fear No Longer Defines Us is exactly what I needed this year. The emotion released from this album is very real and honest and for that I can’t thank Ghost Brigade enough for giving it to us.

YEAR END REVIEW
It seemed like I was a bit aloof this year when it came to scratching under the surface for those really great underground releases, at least more than usual. I don’t want to say that 2011 was a disappointing year because admittedly, I could have been more diligent but either way this year will not go down in my personal history book as one of the greats. Now, that said, these ten albums are in no way just “okay” and I have serious doubts that anything else out that flew under my radar would top my #1. Speaking of, 2011 makes the fourth year in a row that my album of the year comes from a band that I had no knowledge of prior to this year. Maybe it’s because I have no expectations for these bands? Whatever the reason, that interesting fact is what makes doing this so great and absolutely worth it. To constantly be surprised each and every year so that my love for the music stays invigorated and hungry for more. Here’s to 2012 and to every upstart band looking to make their splash and every veteran band who feels like no one is listening. We are and we’re waiting for you.

Probably the most militantly aggressive album I came across in the black/ death field this year. Scorching and relentless.
Spearhead - Theomachia

Hemoptysis - Misanthropic Slaughter

Disma - Towards the Megalith
Taake - Noregs Vaapen
Is it cheesy? Is it clichéd? Is it ridiculously over-produced and gimmicky? You bet it is.
Fleshgod Apocalypse - Agony
