A band that I’ve always enjoyed, that never seemed to get a fair shake, Vreid experimented a little with their sound and ended up releasing their best album to date.

Hate Eternal - Phoenix Amongst the Ashes
This was probably the biggest surprise of the year.  Hate Eternal, while always somewhat enjoyable, was never a band I thought I’d be putting on one of these lists, and yet, Phoenix Amongst the Ashes is the best work they’ve ever done, a punishing album of excellent hyper Death Metal.
Cianide - Gods of Death

Another really pleasant surprise this year.  Smoldering veterans cranking out some insanely head bang inducing Death Metal that proves that the old-school sound is always most convincing when done by a band that’s been there.
Vanhelgd - Church of Death

A late in the year listen for me, but one that pretty much immediately insisted on a position here.  Palpable evil flows from every angle on this truly nasty album.  NWN! prod is such a great label.  Truly ferocious Swedish Death Metal that doesn’t sound anything like some kids in America trying too hard to sound like Left Hand Path.
Ptahil - For His Satanic Majesty’s Glory
Who?  I don’t know either, but this Indiana Black Metal duo pretty much came from nowhere and blew me away with their at times doomy, hard rock-influenced brand of evil.  Well worth a look.

At long last a full-length release from this adrenaline fueled, violence crazed, Punk/Thrash/Black Metal horde.  Pure Madness that does an excellent job capturing the unhinged mania the band creates.
Dodsferd - Spitting with Hatred, the Insignificance of Life

Band main man Wrath finally (thankfully) broke out of his dreary depressive phase and is all pissed off again.  We benefit big time as this is probably the best album he’s ever done.  Raw and angry, the opening track is the best Black Metal song I’ve heard in years.
Vastum  - Carnal Law

Incredible to me that this is actually the San Francisco Death Metal band’s demo.  Best sounding demo ever.  Heavy as Hell, and a sure sign that they’ll impress me again at some point.
An oppressively heavy album by perhaps the only band close to capable of doing what Australia’s Portal do.  A master work of evil density.
There’s too much that’s amazing about this band and their debut to fit in this small area.  Cavernous, Immense Death Metal that simply obliterated every album this year.  The next album can’t come soon enough.

Pretty thin year to be honest.  I generally have a hard time narrowing down to just ten, but this year it seemed like I was scraping just to find ten I liked well enough to put on the list at all.  Obviously a Death Metal Year, and I think it’s pretty interesting that four of the entrants are debuts and two more of them are second albums.  I guess, then that it could be said that it was a banner year for newer bands to shine, and this fact was obviously bolstered by some highly anticipated but ultimately extremely disappointing releases by long-running acts (I’m lookin at you Morbid Angel).
