The buzz around these guys is well deserved and a conduit to the past NWOBHM movement and the present-day harkening back to that period in complete subservience some 30-years late. While it took a few years to get the gears oiled and running again, Hell re-evaluates the stagnant traditional genre and shoots adrenaline into the very vein that once lay dormant until the masses finally ‘got it’.
Hell - Human Remains
10
OZ - Burning Leather
9
This was a late addition for me simply due to the fact that this is yet another band that came back from the dead to capture that past glory and make it even better. OZ never got the recognition I feel they deserved and this release with a few reworked tracks and some new efforts is just going to be one of the more talked-about releases come 2012.
Autopsy - Macabre Eternal
8
Yeah…16-years away did little to stop the deadly machine that is autopsy. For one of the best death metal bands in history to re-emerge with a record of this caliber is not only rare, it’s an unexplainable anomaly. With a renewed sickness and twisted ideas Macabre Eternal takes you by the throat and just chokes conformity from your chest with all the subtly of a pick ax to the skull. This was one hell of a comeback!
Arch/Matheos - Sympathetic Resonance
7
What can be said about an album that houses one of the best vocalists in metal from one of the most underrated bands of the 80’s? Jim Matheos’ intensely proficient guitar work just shatters the norm throughout this record and age doesn’t seem to apply to John Arch anywhere - this is, hands down, the prog-metal album of the year (sorry D.T. fans!).
6
When I first took on this album I expected nothing, truth told. I was not only surprised at the level of rock music David Coverdale can still croon through, but the current line-up of the ‘snake makes some of the best music since ‘84’s Slide it In. This was all over the map with the occasional ballad that didn’t sap out and rockers that didn’t dilute. Just a great record!
Entrails - The Tomb Awaits
5
For the classic Swedish death metal era there has been one too many pretenders, but Entrails offers the same DM in the very same style to such a high level of resonance that this album gets the proverbial pass and should be swallowed whole at every opportunity. The past is alive!
2
Canada’s duo strikes progressive death gold with its first full-length and in this guy’s estimation created the perfect album of advanced heavy metal that twists and turns more than a desert snake on LSD. These guys are brilliant in every sense of the word from their ’09 EP to this majestic collective. You need to hear this band!
In Solitude - The World. The Flesh. The Devil.
4
Sweden has no shortage of amazing bands these days (or ever, really), and In Solitude takes the traditional Mercyful Fate style to a new and exciting level. The second album just maimed any peers in the way and showcased a total revival of that classic NWOBHM-influenced sound.
3
Patrick Walker’s disbanding of Warning left a lot of fans with sorrowed emotions, but taking up the mantle was 40 Watt Sun, which produced an album even more moving and intense than Watching From a Distance, which I didn’t think possible. Leaving Warning in the dust served Walker and co. well because this record still rotates on my turntable.
Deus Otiosus - Murderer
1
This Danish outfit simply stupefied me with its first full-length album, and after buying it I simply have yet to stop playing it. The death metal riffing in this record is nothing short of insane, catching your ear with some ridiculously intense chord changes and crisp production. For 2011 this is what I most recall with total reverence!

Two-thousand-eleven was a rather interesting year for metal music. I saw some very high-caliber releases decimate the underground, as well as some ground-level issuances cause me to pause here and there. I am wholly alone in this, but the Lou Reed/Metallica endeavor surprised me; granted, I don’t feel it will be an album I'll revisit with satiated glee, but it was a good foray into worlds foreign for the ‘frisco boys.
New releases from Leviathan, OZ, Venom, In Solitude, Burzum, Disma, Portrait and a slew of others made for a solid 2011. I was happy to hear how heavy metal music is staying strong and implementing adrenaline shots all over the board in virtually every sub-genre available. It’s this sort of output that makes our movement proud and something to keep a close eye on for ’12. Many sincere thanks for supporting, watching and reading Metal Psalter; it’s your support and dedication that keeps us going and moves us to the top of many priority lists. We will continue to bring you the best quality reviews, musings, contests and interviews as our appreciative gesture.
We’re not getting older - we’re getting better! Have a safe New Year’s and a tempestuous 2012. We’ll see you there.
