Welcome back, Peter Wichers! This album is a trip back to Soilwork’s classic sound. Great riffs, catchy choruses, and a barrage of guitar and keyboard solos make The Panic Broadcast an instant classic.
Soilwork - The Panic Broadcast
10
Exodus - Exhibit B: The Human Condition
9
Exodus proved that they still have it with this release. Great production and a classic thrash feel made it enjoyable from start to finish. Particularly bright spots included “Downfall” and “Democide”.
Freedom Call - Legend of the Shadow King
8
Freedom Call has shifted gears from straight power metal to a darker, more ominous variety of power metal. Dan Zimmerman’s drumming is excellent throughout this surprisingly strong concept album.
Enforcer - Diamonds
7
We saw a lot of “vintage” style albums this year, but Enforcer’s sophomore release is the leader of the pack. Great guitar harmonies, enjoyable old school high-pitch vocals, and great songwriting make Diamonds a worthy addition to the top 10 of 2010.
Charred Walls of the Damned - Charred Walls of the Damned
6
Richard Christy, Ripper Owens, and Steve DiGiorgio- sans Jon Schaffer. This debut album is a really strong showing of melodic power metal. Jason Suecof’s guitar solos and Richard Christy’s complex drumming make this album a surefire hit for the power metal enthusiast.
Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier
5
Hopefully not Iron Maiden’s final album, their 15th studio release shows that the legends of heavy metal can and will continue to produce high quality music. Epic songs, Bruce Dickinson’s vocals, and 3 lead guitarists make this “21st Century Maiden” release a huge victory.
The Absence - Enemy Unbound
2
These Tampa-area melodic death metallers have achieved a huge win with their latest release. Heavily influenced by the European bands that they’ve toured with, Enemy Unbound is highly recommended to fans of Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy, and the like.
Blind Guardian - At the Edge of Time
4
Hansi is back. This release was long overdue and brought back memories of classic Blind Guardian. The orchestral arrangements on this album are flawless, especially in “Wheel of Time”.
Sabaton - Coat of Arms
3
Sabaton has served another healthy helping of war-themed power metal with Coat of Arms. These Swedes are definitely growing in popularity and toured all over Europe in support of this release. An added darker dimension in songs such as “Wehrmacht” and “The Final Solution” make for more variety.
Nevermore - The Obsidian Conspiracy
1
They are back after a 5 year hiatus. The Obsidian Conspiracy is a beautifully produced journey through the mind of Warrel Dane. Jeff Loomis’s guitar work is awesome as usual. This album simply doesn’t get old.
