This may be a demo, but this is better than the majority of fully produced albums I've heard this year. Dark Cascadian Black Metal that goes perfectly with our Northwestern weather.

Spellcaster - Casting the Spell

MYSPACE
This may be the best sounding demo that I've ever heard, so it's no wonder Heavy Artillery decided to reissue it for a wider audience upon signing these guys. With the energy, youth and talent Spellcaster possess, they have a great shot at making a name for themselves and being around for a long time to come.

With their signing to Spinefarm, one would have thought that finding the new Metsatöll album would have been a lot easier than it was. However, it was worth the time and expense, as Äio ranks among their best.
Rhapsody of Fire - The Frozen Tears of Angels

Here's a band that I never thought would crack my top ten, particularly after their last album Triumph or Agony, which was the very definition of blasé, but Rhapsody hit it out of the park with this one. This is easily the best thing that Luca Turilli has done since his Prophet of the Last Eclipse album.

I'll admit that I didn't care much for this album the first time I heard it, but it has grown on me quite a bit with repeated listens. While Sitra Ahra may not be another Vovin or Secret of the Runes, it is excellent for what it is.

Cathedral - The Guessing Game
Cathedral have never sounded less Metal than they do here, but instead have delivered one damned amazing Prog Rock record.

Four years seems to have been worth the wait. I'm not sure if I like this more than Fex or not, but it's a damned close call in any event and another triumph for Ludicra.

Quite possibly the best of the old school revival bands going today. This album is like listening to the best the NWOBHM had to offer, but with a better recording and mix.

This one kind of took me from nowhere. Previous to purchasing this album, I'd heard only one or two songs from Alcest and thought it was pretty neat, but the album as a whole is incredibly intoxicating and utterly beautiful.

It only took me the first ten minutes of Marrow of the Spirit for me to decide that this was the best thing I'd heard all year - that's how impactful it was for me. Agalloch continue to show me why I love the Pacific Northwest and Metal in general.
