STAFF TOP TEN PICKS
The band’s fifth release finds them taking everything they have done before, throwing it in a blender, amping up the speed, and with a helping of cheekiness, have boldly re-envisioned our kaleidoscopic view of metal. One of the best power metal releases of the year.
Wuthering Heights - Salt
10
Kvelertak - Kvelertak
9
Kvelertak are a band to watch. They have crafted a brilliant debut album that mixes hardcore, rock and black metal in a way that sounds fresh and is delivered in a unique way. This is as thick, dark and addictive as chocolate.
Void of Silence - The Grave of Civilization
8
Smothering - in one word but oh so much more. This is as monolithic and impressive as the architecture that graces the cover. One of the best doom albums I came across this year.
Momentum - Fixation, at Rest
7
Momentum from Iceland really struck a chord with me this year. I feel like I got in line with them to try and move a glacier. Lots of musical references here like Godflesh, Neurosis and Radiohead to name a few. Fixation, at Rest is comprised of crushingly heavy musical landscapes ruptured by cacophonic noises, quiet spaces and vocals that range from soft whispered clean singing to death chortles. A most pleasant find.
Demonic Resurrection - The Return to Darkness
6
In the past, I never really thought much about metal from the the Mideast or even India but several bands popped up on my radar from these locales in 2010 and Demonic Resurrection were one of the first. The Return to Darkness is chock full of progressive death metal that is very well written and played. I am definitely looking forward to what the future holds for the band.
Viathyn - The Peregrine Way
5
Viathyn are for me the "little engine that could". So many releases this year flew in out of my player and after the first time through, The Peregrine Way almost never made it back but something magical happened. Their melodic hooks got snagged in my brain. Slowly but surely the band completely won me over. Sure the production isn't what it could be but the heart, soul and beauty of this album overcome all. The Peregrine Way is a true gem and the band most certainly should become a massive sensation.
Agrypnie - 16[485]
2
It's good to see black metal evolve despite the protestations of those with narrow viewpoints. Agrypnie's 16[485] works when it shouldn't but I am not going to sit around and desconstruct or over analyze it because all I know is that it simply moves me to new plateaus that I never knew existed. Stunning from start to finish.
Kingcrow - Phlegethon
4
Kingcrow have evolved into one sophisticated musical animal. Phlegethon is a mix of polished progressive rock and metal that is an Images and Words or Empire for the modern age. Heavy conceptually and expansive in musical breadth, the band deliver gleaming compositions that evoke the best of prog bands like Genesis, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree and Tool.
Black Sun Aeon - Routa
3
Routa splits its personalities of death and goth metal in a dual disc release that is as dense as a Finnish forest. It's nearly taken me a full year to completely comprehend this treasure trove of a record. I expect to be enjoying this album for many years to come. Frozen is hands down my favorite song of the year.
Day Six - The Grand Design
1
The Grand Design is probably the most perfect album that I have come across in 2010. Stellar in every aspect. It's brimming with exuberant musicality that's enshrouded in light and shade that define the true soul at its center. It quite possibly has one of the most engrossing concepts ever put to record. The Grand Design is a remarkable acheivement that the band should be rightfully proud of and it will surely stand the test of time.
