STAFF TOP TEN PICKS
I waited for a good part of the year sitting on my hands waiting for this album to fall into my lap.  Melodic and well played, it was worth the wait.  Live, the vocals are what attracted me the most to this band, because variety is the spice of life-- and new singer Mikey Powell really knows what he is doing.  I hope this lineup sticks and look forward to more from these guys.

Motörhead - The Wörld is Yours

BAND'S WEBSITE
The loudest band in the world, Motorhead, is still heavy as sin, and still set the bar.  They never slowed down, and never lost a beat.  They continue to make music that I bang my head to and want to see live.  I hope that now in my twenties I rock 1/100th as hard as Motorhead does in their sixties.
Immolation - Majesty and Decay

BAND'S WEBSITE
Dark, powerful, and eerie, Immolation forces their massive foot through your speakers and gives you a good kick in the head on this album.  Somehow Majesty and Decay manages to be both gritty and clean in overall sound and production.  Full and booming, this album really sounds how intense and powerful Immolation sounds live.
Mount Carmel - Mount Carmel

MYSPACE
It’s always important to remember that heavy comes in all forms.  I saw these guys open for The Sword and it was love at first listen.  A wave of fresh vintage (if that even makes sense) washed over me, and after their set I felt reborn.  This album and The Sword tour I hope gets Mount Carmel more exposure and fans. The power trio is straight blues and rock, yet those three pull off so much heavy and so much soul at the same time.

Misery Index - Heirs to Thievery

BAND'S WEBSITE
Such a smart band, and such a smart album, this album definitely grabbed a lot of well deserved attention.  Arguably one of the best bands working right now, I am itching to see more of Misery Index live.  On this album they move with such brutal force.  It’s constantly impressive and constantly fulfilling every wish I have musically.  I can’t shower enough praise on Heirs to Thievery.
Aborted - Coronary Reconstruction EP

BAND'S WEBSITE
Aborted has some sort of voodoo about them that makes me lose my mind and completely relax at the same time.  The only band that no matter what time of day can get me flustered does it again with Coronary Reconstruction.  Definitely worth a listen, or two or ten, as well as the rest of their library (if you haven’t already).
The Sword - Warp Riders

MYSPACE
BAND'S WEBSITE
The Warp Riders is an excellent step forward for contemporary doom metal heroes with their third album.  The Sword’s previous albums were magnificent and the Warp Riders, while being a slight shift, was a step in the right direction and a really great album.  “Lawless Lands” is my favorite track!
Woe of Tyrants - Threnody

MYSPACE
This album was my pick of the year, long before the year was even over.  An expressive, rare piece of art to grace the metal world, the album reads like a powerful novel about the inner journey of every man.  I haven’t cared about lyrics in nearly a decade-- these took my breath away, and twisted at my gut.   Threnody is a bold and necessary self-exploration, played out over brilliantly composed melodic death metal. Woe of Tyrants forced me to look inward on this album, and to me that is exactly what music should do.  I could not ask for anything more from this album.

Swashbuckle - Crime Always Pays...
I’d love to sit here and say that gimmicks offend my good nature, but Swashbuckle has changed my ways.  Crime Always Pays is ferocious, funny, smart, brash, vicious, crude, and chock loaded of pirate goodness.  An instant favorite for me, this album won me over against my will-much like Swashbuckle did the first time I saw them.

One of the most under estimated, under played, and under appreciated bands in the genre, Pro-Pain’s twelfth studio album keeps their standards high while trying out some different things.  Check out “Destroy Your Enemy,” and “AWOL,” which I hope to see live-I swear if I don’t see these New York hardcore/metal grizzly bears back in the states touring soon I may lose my mind.  Stop touring in just Europe!

This year was a really great year for album releases, and for me it was hard to decide who made the top 10.  I hope that next year is filled with as many solid releases as this year, more tours, more interviews, and even more exciting heavy music.  From traveling 1350 miles to interview Byzantine at their last show, to meeting and interviewing Nile in November, this year was wild.  Thanks for the love and support!  Spread the word!
