A massive improvement over their debut, From the Devil’s Tomb really surprised me with their subtle switch in direction to a more death metal style with heaps of ritualistic and occult nuances. Just amazing.
Unsun - Clinic for Dolls

MYSPACE
The over-saturated and watered-down genre that is female-fronted goth metal has become a punch line these days with just how many truly worthless bands there are in this field.  Thankfully, Unsun had something to say about that and released an album that literally shows how ridiculous all the pretenders are and how incredibly enjoyable this style can be if people actually care enough to write good songs.  Sirenia, Tristania, Leaves Eyes, I’m looking at YOU.  This is how it’s done.  Clinic for Dolls is just about the most mesmerizingly catchy album I’ve heard in years.
Sargeist - Let the Devil In

BAND'S WEBSITE
I’ve always liked Horna much more than Sargeist, but it seems like Shatraug took the good parts of both bands and created a merger of supremely hateful black metal with criminally catchy melodies.  Let the Devil In is so hypnotically enjoyable that the entire album can repeat twice before you realize it.
Humiliation - Dawn of Warfare

NO BAND WEBSITE
Possibly the diamond in the rough of 2010, Dawn of Warfare is old school death metal done perfectly.  Humiliation is Bolt Thrower in disguise and are waiting to crush everyone who happens to come upon their debut album.

Like I said in my review, this album defines haunting beauty.
Aldaaron - Nous Reviendrons Immortels

BAND'S WEBSITE
Seemingly out of nowhere, Aldaaron created a stunningly magnificent debut merging melody and cold black metal in a way I haven’t heard since Storm of the Light’s Bane.  However, not a Dissection clone in any way, Aldaaron stands alone with this remarkable album.

There were times when this was going to be my album of the year.  The fact that I could make that statement about a Fear Factory album in 2010 amazes me.  Out of the ashes and reborn, Fear Factory has rejuvenated an old yet staunchly loyal fan base with Mechanize.  Welcome back.

What can I say that I didn’t in my review.  This has been my #1 for a solid seven months.  I was sort of worried that I might grow tired of it after so many spins, but I’m still just as enamored with it more than half a year later.

YEAR END REVIEW
What a great year.  Not since ’06 have I had so many album-of-the-year candidates and Top Ten worthy albums as a whole.  The weirdest part about it is that two of my favorite bands released albums that didn’t make the final cut, one of which was a complete dud.  In fact, three albums were released early in 2010 that I had massively high hopes for and was let down immensely by each. So naturally, the year wasn’t starting too well with stinkers from Orphaned Land, Rotting Christ and Nachtmystium, but several new-comers and an old-timer came roaring out of the gate and by May, I already had four or five contenders for the top spot.  It was shocking, actually.  The year finished just as strong and before I knew it, it was the middle of December and I still didn’t know where to start in putting this list together.

As you’ll see, France had a big year, claiming three spots, but as for genres and countries, this is easily the most diverse list I’ve ever done which just proves how stellar of a year it was for metal across the board.  Hopefully you’ll agree with some my picks and maybe even give a few a listen for yourself if you haven’t already.  Here’s to 2011 being just as solid.

Inquisition has really begun to receive a lot of attention in the past few years and have even secured a spot on the 2011 edition of Maryland Deathfest, but those of us who have known about them for a while now are not surprised by the quality of their albums.  I was however, surprised that Ominous Doctrines… is possibly their best album to date. Ferocious.

After a somewhat acclaimed debut, Alcest ascended their unique take on this post-black, shoegaze metal style to a level that will undoubtedly separate them from any of the trend-jumping imitators.  Lush and beautiful, yet aggressive and fierce, Écailles de lune is a masterpiece.
