STAFF TOP TEN PICKS
A dirgey, evil, nefarious monster of a death metal album.  Comes close to beating Incantation at their own game.  With us all too briefly, it leaves you wanting MORE!
Vasaeleth - Crypt Born & Tethered to Ruin
MYSPACE
Kvelertak - Kvelertak
What a surprise!  This album seemingly came from nowhere to really impress and quickly secured a spot on this list.  Huge, energetic punk infused rock laced with a trace of black metal which succeeds massively when it doesn’t seem like it should.
Profanatica - Disgusting Blasphemies Against God
MYSPACE
BAND'S WEBSITE
Really an amazing deconstruction of black metal that is as ugly as it gets, but at the same time rhythmically very pleasing.  Their finest work thus far for certain.
Slough Feg - The Animal Spirits
MYSPACE
BAND'S WEBSITE
Absolutely the best traditional metal band in America, Slough Feg is pretty much incapable of releasing an album that will not find itself on my year end best of list.  Fantastic songwriting and execution make this a modern classic.
Weapon - From the Devil’s Tomb
Improving dramatically since the debut, Weapon may well be the best band in Canada.  Brutal as all hell, drenched in intense density, but also featuring an uncanny sense of haunting melody.  Incredible.
MYSPACE
Another band releasing the finest material of their career this year, Inquisition opened the songs up a bit to let them breathe and the result is a more melodic, yet no less powerfully occult experience.
Ares Kingdom - Incendiary
MYSPACE
BAND'S WEBSITE
A veritable buffet of killer death/thrash riffs.  More awesome riffs than most of the albums on this list combined.  How is this band not more well known?  Mandatory listening.

Black Anvil - Triumvirate
MYSPACE
Pretty much the anti-sophomore-slump album of the year.  Black Anvil doesn’t get nearly the respect they deserve, but they’re not gonna sit around and mope about it.  Instead, they improved immensely on their already impressive debut in just about every way possible.  Unfortunately this won’t be an album you see on too many of these lists.
Sargeist - Let the Devil In
BAND'S WEBSITE
This was undoubtedly the year of Watain.  They received alllll the black metal hype this year, and while Erik Danielsson was doing his 500th interview for some glossy publication or other, Shatraug snuck this one in and completely outdid them.
Melechesh - The Epigenesis
MYSPACE
BAND'S WEBSITE
This was perhaps my most anticipated release of the year, and I couldn’t have been happier with it.  Everything I want a Melechesh album to be.  Truly in a class of their own, they manage to be the most unique black metal band in the world without succumbing to any proggy, over-reaching pretentiousness.  Magnificent.

Inquisition - Ominous Doctrines of the
Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm
5
I always have a tough time with these lists at the end of the year.  Usually the difficulty comes from not being able to whittle the number of great albums down to a measly ten.  This year, however, I had a really hard time coming up with ten that I felt were honestly really deserving of a spot on the list.  Sure there were countless albums I heard and enjoyed, perhaps a great deal even, but when it came time for the hallowed ten, I just didn’t feel right about putting them on there.  Then there’s the fact that several albums released early on in the year that I felt would absolutely be on there, ended up not remaining very enjoyable when revisited (sorry Mirai).  Overall a decent year for metal I’d say.  A couple really impressive albums from long runners, and a few surprises from some relative youngsters.
