I was really surprised that I like this album as much as I do. It’s as ugly as anything released in recent memory; vengeful, angry and sinister. Not usually my bag surface wise but this is an exception as it truly feels of opposition.
Triptykon - Eparistera Daimones
10
Watain - Lawless Darkness
9
One of but a few black metal releases I really enjoyed listening to this year. This one is at the top of them all and finds the band at the top of their game.
8
A near perfect melding of extreme metal and Middle Eastern authentic sounds as I interpret them. Really interesting and absorbing which is not easy to accomplish but they do it very well.
Sig:Ar:Tyr - Godsaga
7
This is a release that wears its influences like badges of honor and reflects them magnificently with justice and reverence. Epic is a word I don’t use often but it applies here. Inspiring and triumphant!
Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier
6
If ever a Maiden album took awhile to grow on me this is it. Once it started to sink in I found a solid, attentive and worthy effort that is memorable and brings me much happiness with each listen.
5
Mesmerizing. Still absorbing it really. It has met expectations although it has peculiarities about it that strike me as cause for thought, which is good. Overall I like that it takes some chances and yet balances out so very well.
Anathema - We’re Here Because We’re Here
2
Seven years in the making and well worth the wait. It’s a very emotive, complete and profound release. Also the incredible production really is worth noting. A+ all around for such a unique and expertly recorded release.
Slough Feg - The Animal Spirits
4
This is a perfect album from Slough Feg. I love everything about it. Truly, this is a modern masterpiece of traditional metal if I have ever heard one. They are at the top of their game and perhaps, in my opinion, the best American band going right now.

Odroerir is German for the Islandic term 'Óðrerir' - a vessel for the mead of Wisdom and Poetry in old Nordic mythology. It's a shame this release is really under just about everybody’s radar. It has a little bit of everything in a folk metal release other than abundant BM/DM extremities and is one of my favorite FM releases in years. To me this is a true no-bullshit celebration of heritage, nature and existence through music.

Technically, this is from 2009 as it was released the last week of year in Europe but I consider it a 2010 release for it was too late to make last year’s list. I think this is their best yet. It’s truly amazing with the shit they pull off on this one. It’s like nothing I’ve heard done in the genre before. I don’t think anyone else could do it. A true milestone, not only in their career but across the spectrum. They may have established themselves across a decade and a half, but with The Voice of Steel they fucking slay the competition here and now.

YEAR END REVIEW
Doing these ranked year end lists is a bit of labor, a lot of fun and sometimes a bit unfair it seems. Dealing with as many albums as released, trying to listen to as many possible and listen enough times in context against or with one another, and to then rank a finite number?
