This is a monster of an album, top shelf death metal with a somewhat unique sound. It is great to hear Marc Grewe (ex Morgoth) fronting a death metal band again. This is one all star band that I really hope sticks around.
Insidious Disease - Shadowcast
10
Sodom - In War and Pieces
9
Sodom are one of those bands that really don’t put out bad albums, still some are obviously better than others. In War and Pieces is one of the better ones. It is a lot more aggressive than their last album, and more consistent than M-16.
8
A wonderfully diverse traditional heavy metal album and a nice return to form after the slightly disappointing Ape Uprising.
Nominon - Monumentomb
7
It isn’t hard to find bands who play Stockholm style Swedish death metal these days, but it is hard to find bands who do it this well. Monumentomb is a crushing album that is just packed with great death metal riffs. Grave and Unleashed both put out solid albums this year, but Nominon managed to beat them at their own game.
Winterfylleth - The Mercian Sphere
6
A band that excels at creating atmosphere without being atmospheric. This is a big improvement over The Ghost of Heritage, and I expect it to remain in my rotation for years to come.
5
Enslaved is a band that I have been following since the mid 90’s. I have enjoyed pretty much everything that they have put out up to this point, but Axioma Ethica Odini is a high point in their recent career. They have ratcheted up the intensity without losing any of the progressive edge that they have been developing over the last decade.
Hooded Menace - Never Cross the Dead
2
This album is death/doom in its purest form. Simple plodding riffs, haunting melodies and deep guttural vocals. There aren’t any keyboards, clean vocals or other tricks here, just pure metal. This album is just plain addictive.
Hail of Bullets - On Divine Winds
4
I love old school death metal, and with Divine Winds, Hail of Bullets has secured a place among the best bands currently playing this style. They did a great job of capitalizing on the good will that was generated by their debut.
3
An example of old metal guys playing old school metal, Incendiary provides a crash course in everything that is good about extreme metal. This was a big step up form their previous work.

Fischer appears to have channeled all of the negative emotions related to the demise of Celtic Frost into this album. Eparistera Daimones is one of the heaviest, most evil sounding albums that I have heard in years, and arguably Fischer’s most relevant work since Into The Pandemonium. This isn’t the kind of album that you will listen to every day for a week, it is more likely something that you will listen to once a month for a decade. A truly unique album.

YEAR END REVIEW
2010 was a great year for metal, I can’t remember ever having such a difficult time making a top 10 list. There just seemed to be a lot of albums that were worthy of recognition this year. I thought that death metal as a genre had a really strong year, with both old and new bands putting out killer releases. Also, it is odd for quality releases by Nevermore and Blind Guardian not to make my year end list. Both of them released albums that would have ranked in most other years. I guess we can only hope that some of 2010’s momentum will carry over into 2011.
