STAFF TOP TEN PICKS
The second this album kicked into gear I was blown right out of my seat! Death metal, Chicago style; relentless and brutal the way we like it and the only way to produce it. This is just a disgusting album that represents the death metal scene nicely for the last year. Some ‘super-drumming’, caustic vocals, and downright brutal riffs make Have for the Insane a must-hear album for the loved one that loves to unceremoniously smash things at random to good music.
Cardiac Arrest - Haven for the Insane
10
Forgive Me - Last Drop of Life
9
A Jordanian duo offers up one hell of a depressing vibe in its debut. For the rash of suicidal black bands rising from the grand abyss of commercialism, Forgive Me relies less on finesse and style and more on imagery and inner strife to force you to dig deep into yourself and find what hurts and drives you to keep going. While far from perfect or original, the overall feel of this release never fails to make me think, negative or otherwise.
Nevermore - The Obsidian Conspiracy
8
The kings of progressive thrash metal, Nevermore fails to disappoint behind vocalist Warrel Dane’s cerebral lyrical prowess and one of the genre’s most underrated guitarists in Jeff Loomis. Once more, Nevermore creates an album that not only makes you think, but causes you to question just about everything to the nth degree. A band certainly for the select few who simply “get it”.
Galar - Til Alle Heimsens Endar
7
Simply put, this is a beautiful album that is so rich and full of musical visages that I simply had to hear it about six or seven times in a row after buying it. In a scene where Viking metal has become the next “in” thing, Galar rises over the trends and creates honest, intelligent music for intelligent, intricate people. Just a masterpiece of tall design.
Allegaeon - Fragments of Form and Function
6
Technical death metal has certainly found a flag-waver in this Colorado outfit that shreds like a newly-sharpened meat cleaver at virtually anything in its way. While being heavy enough for the death metal tag, the melodic and catchy nature of the music is enough to warrant close inspection from even the most arduous death fan.
Wheel - Wheel
5
Stoner/Doom rock at its absolute finest! The debut from Germany’s Wheel is exactly the shot in the arm that the doom scene needs, and badly. Groove-oriented, solid and ugly where needed, Wheel provides the most reclusive escape from the norm and right into the world of down-tempo wonderment.
Carach Angren - Death Came Through a Phantom Ship
2
Melodic black metal with a penchant for conceptual, paranormal themes this Dutch trio made the underground stand up and take some serious notice. Journeying through the trials and fate of a ghostly ship made the album a solid winner for me.
Nàttsòl - Stemning
4
Taking up the mantle for the black metal sound surrounded in naturalistic atmosphere, Norway’s Nattsol delivers a happy mix of some modern black fused with some old-school second wave sensibilities, creating a thought-provoking masterpiece fit for any mood you manage to convey. This is definitely naturalistic black metal done right.
Thulcandra - Fallen Angels’ Dominion
3
Germany’s answer to Vinterland or Dissection. A long time in the making, the album has been put on the backburner for some time due to personal issues within the band, but there’s no denying it was worth the wait. Brilliant from the first note to the last chords, this is a band to watch closely.
Les Discrets - Septembre Et Ses Dernières Pensées
1
What can I really say about this album? It moved me to unknown places the first time I heard it and delivered me to new crevices each additional time. Shoegaze, atmospheric, melancholy, downtempo - whatever you choose to label this band, this album has the most brilliant assemblage of arrangements and tone that I’ve heard in a long time. Truthfully, this was my number one for the last six months and nothing could top it.

Two-thousand-ten: Another year in the books. With some amazing records that came out this year, it was a fine year for metal with great bands like Agalloch, Burzum, Nevermore, Arckanum, and a slew of others putting out some great music. We also suffered some incredible setbacks and losses, most notably in the deaths of Peter Steele (heart failure) and Mr. Ronnie James Dio (stomach cancer), and the sudden sickness of King Diamond, who is currently recovering from triple bypass surgery after suffering “several” heart attacks. When you grow up as fans of some of these musicians you never think about or even expect your idols to die or get sick, yet they do; however, we’re lucky enough to be left with some magical memories and wonderful tunes to get us through the dark periods, and that makes the losses somewhat bearable. It’s been a year of ups and downs, highs and lows, that’s for sure, but in the end our scene is still what it is because of the true fans that care enough to keep it underground. Eternal and sincere thanks for making MetalPsalter.com a true winner in the metal music world; we appreciate all of you who support us and visit our site. I hope you continue to do so, for our caliber will never drop. So keep us at the front of your metal reviews list! See you next year!
