STAFF TOP TEN PICKS

STAFF TOP TEN PICKS
It's really too bad this line-up dissolved right rather quickly after the disc's release. The twin leads rule and the songs collected on this album are among the band's best since the Middle Ages trilogy.
Grave Digger - Ballads of a Hangman
10
Immortal - All Shall Fall
9
While it doesn't live up to its hype or worth the 7 year wait, it's great to have Immortal back to their cold, crisp Blackened bleakness.
Megadeth - Endgame
8
No matter what spews from MegaDave's mouth (conspiracy theories, politics, religion, MMA, Metallica, coffee, etc.), the man knows how to shred and armed with guitarist Chris Broadrick, Megadeth releases their best album in well over a decade. Endgame is magnetic 'Deth.
God Dethroned - Passiondale
7
If most Melodic Death Metal is too sissified for you, try Passiondale on for size. This one is aperfect melding of harshness and harmonies.
Nashville Pussy - From Hell to Texas
6
Extreme metal? No. Extremely awesome? Yes. This album should have been called Southern Boom. Pour another shot and Rock!
The Gates of Slumber - Hymns of Blood and Thunder
5
With this album, The Gates of Slumber just became American's premiere Doom Metal band and knocked Candlemass' lastest off this list.
Satan's Host - Power ~ Purity ~ Perfection 999
2
A combination of creativity and powerful guitars with complex and memorable songs causes this disc to exude perfection. Totally impressive and classy Anti-Cosmic Black Metal with noticable touches of Doom, Thrash, Death and even traditional Heavy Metal. Would have been the album of the year if it weren't for...
The Chasm - Farseeing the Paranormal Abysm
4
Probably the most complex and exhaustive Death Metal album ever released. Even after multiple listens there is still plenty do be discovered and deciphered.
Gorgoroth - Quantos Possunt ad Satanitatem Trahunt
3
For years, this band has been more image and controversy than anything else. Infernus strikes back with a new/old line up that released an unexpectedly brilliant, classy and grim Black Metal disc. Who knew Gorgorth could do more than blast and snarl for Satan? Easily the band's best disc.
Heaven and Hell - The Devil You Know
1
Seldom do reunions really offer anything new or memorable aside from overpriced concert tees and a lame, multi-angle DVD. This reunion spit out a fantastic DVD, greatest hits disc, stunning new music and more on-stage energy than most 20-year olds currently slinging guitars and throwing up the Horns. Easily the best album (and biggest suprise) of 2009. Dio, Iommi, Butler and Appice prove to heavier and more relevant today than when they were calling themselves Black Sabbath.

I guess these clowns were too busy trying to release/sign more techcorebore crap instead of some top shelf Swedish Death Metal. Vomitory’s Carnage Euphoria should have been released stateside! Not all of us over here are trendmongers.
The Cavalera Bros. are gone and not coming back. If you can’t get over it, get bent. While Andreas and the boys are still stuck on that Roots-groove, A-Lex finds them bringing back the thrash that has been missing for years. Plus the orchestra and instrumentals are a nice touch.
