STAFF TOP TEN PICKS
Alternatingly pastoral and vicious, a beautiful and violent picture is painted, dare I say the best active Irish band.
Altar of Plagues - White Tomb
The Chasm - Farseeing the Paranormal Abysm
Insanely dense and a virtual smorgasbord of riffs. A phenomenal band releases their most accomplished and impressive work. Album of the year by a mile.
General Surgery - Corpus in Extremis: Analysing Necroticism
The undisputed kings of Swedish gore-grind deliver another punishingly depraved slab of unendingly enjoyable Carcass worship, nearly surpassing their muse in intensity.
Hypocrisy - A Taste of Extreme Divinity
The much-anticipated return of Tägtgren’s death machine doesn’t disappoint. Surprisingly vicious.
Krallice - Dimensional Bleedthrough
Otherworldly in its density and intensity. Trance-inducingly mind-blowing disharmonic guitar lines mesmerize, and Lev Weinstein is one of the most incredible drummers on the planet.
Old Man’s Child - Slaves of the World
An album I felt a lot of people slept on, Galder writes some of the most rhythmically impressive and engaging black metal around.
Slough Feg - Ape Uprising!
Unquestionably the finest pure metal band in America . Scalzi is a genius.
Portal - Swarth
By far one of the most intriguing bands on Planet Earth, the Australians really hit their stride here. At once suffocating and terrifying. The true future of evil.
Revolting - Dreadful Pleasures
Old school Swedish Death Metal done better than a lot of the bands back then did it. I’ve always been a sucker for Rogga Johansson’s work, and this album is among his finest.
Wolves in the Throne Room - Black Cascade
Unfairly criticized, this album is simply beautiful. A masterwork in USBM.
