Melodic and thrashy, but with actual singing? I'm down for that. Still, I think the album could have used a little more speed.

This album has a ton of variety. When I listened to "Solar Empire," I thought it was great, but it could be even better with some more speed.  The very next song, I received my wish. The songs all have something different but worthwhile to offer.

Winds of Plague - The Great Stone War

The Great Stone War is a delightful romp through an apocalyptic battlefield, a concept you can hear clearly through the music even without prior knowledge of the band's intentions. Concept albums are hard to do well, but Winds of Plague pulls it off.
Skeletonwitch - Breathing the Fire

Fantastically thrashy with twisted melodies. My personal favorite songs are "Longing for Domination", "Where the Light has Failed" and "Stand Fight and Die".
Skyfire - Esoteric

I'm a sucker for a good intro, and Esoteric's got that for sure. But an intro has to be followed by something equally intense so as to not turn into an anticlimactic, disappointing mess. Skyfire accomplishes that intensity with an album both complex and compelling, and avoids the trap of being so keyboard-heavy that you want to cut your ears off.
Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Agorapocalypse

Some people criticized Agoraphobic Nosebleed's newest effort for slowing it down a notch at times, but I disagree. I've always thought that the best part of a rollercoaster is when it comes to a screeching halt right before a crazy plummet straight downwards; the slower part reminds you just how ridiculously fast the rest of it is.
Megadeth - Endgame

Often when big name acts release an album, their hype is based more on brand recognition than merit; but seriously dudes, Megadeth's new album is the shit. The classic Megadeth formula has not been lost, and Dave Mustaine can rest safe in the knowledge that his band is still way better than Metallica.

Behemoth - Evangelion

Behemoth present a perfectly balanced mesh of brutal riffs and aggressive melodies in their latest endeavor. The whole album has a haunting atmosphere that makes it the perfect soundtrack to ritual murder.
