Nachtmystium once again make their way into my Top 10 even after a semi-drastic change in style. Masters at creating atmosphere, Nachtmystium has produced an extremely impressive hybrid of psychedelic rock and modern black metal. I’m also sort of tying in their Worldfall EP release from earlier in the year that was magnificent as well. Since I can’t justify taking up a top 10 slot with an EP, I’ll let it influence my opinion that Nachtmytsium deserves to be among the ten best for 2008 on the strength of both releases this year.
Nachtmystium - Assassins: Black Meddle Part 1
10
Heaven Shall Burn - Iconoclast
9
Probably the most aggressive and pummeling metalcore album I’ve ever heard. One of those albums that you never really intended on listening to in the first place, but was just so persistently catchy and heavy that you couldn’t stop listening to it. I’m surprised at myself for adding this, but holy shit if this album doesn’t (roundhouse) kick ass.
Cradle of Filth - Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder
8
What a strange year, first a metalcore album in my top 10 and now Cradle of Filth. I never thought I would ever care enough about another Cradle of Filth album after Midian to give it even multiple listens, let alone consider it amongst the best of the year. God Speed... shows that Dani and Co. are still masters at creating truly inspired concept albums with poetically provoking lyrics and fast, criminally catchy songs to boot.
Agalloch - The White EP
7
Only because I desperately wanted to contradict myself, I’m adding The White EP. In all seriousness though, anything that includes a song like “Sowilo Rune” is getting on this list, period. Agalloch continues to show that their talent for this game beyond reproach. Even when they’re just sitting around brainstorming (aka fucking around), they still manage to record something brilliant, lush and hauntingly emotional.
Doom: VS - Dead Words Speak
6
One of the best doom bands around with possibly the worst name. If not the worst, then the most inane. Dead Words Speak picks up where he left off with the 2006 debut, Aeternum Vale. A gloomy, melancholic, growling doom metal album. The real talent in Draconian is found here.
Dead Congregation - Graves of the Archangels
5
Nasty, filthy, gritty Incantation-inspired death metal from Greece; Dead Congregation burst onto the scene with this opus of anti-Christian venom. Sure to make many top 10 lists this year, Dead Congregation have been noticed and we will be keeping our eyes on them from now on.
Disfear - Live the Storm
2
This is easily the most energetic, blood-pumping, adrenaline-fueled and downright fun album of 2008. Had Rocky listened to Live the Storm, he never would have lost to Mr. T. That’s a fact.
Lantlos - Lantlos
4
Another debut album to not only crack my top 10, but the top 5 even. The modern, melancholic, city-life inspired black metal style seems to be gaining popularity by the day, but this self-titled first album from Germany’s Lantlos is anything but some trendy band-wagon attempt. It’s emotionally charged and will leave a lasting impact on you. Same as above; Lantlos, you’ve been noticed.
Skepticism - Alloy
3
The true funeral doom veterans are back with the release of Alloy; six tracks of despair and loss to show all how it’s done. This was almost album of the year worthy. One more ten-plus minute track and that might have done it.
JANVS - Vega
1
Janvs created one of the most beautifully hypnotic progressive black metal albums I’ve ever heard when they recorded Vega. Stunningly rich with talent, yet relaxing and soothing at the same time, Vega is one of those rare albums that sweeps you through the entire album and has you feeling satisfied after the last second ticks away and stays in your head long afterward. A near-perfect album that I had determined to be my album of the year shortly after hearing it for the first and each subsequent listen thereafter cemented that stance.
