CONCERT REPORT

March 22, 2010
Okay, I love black thrash (yes, you all know that!), and the primitive rawness of it can be illuminating and amazing if the right band does it. Vomitor is not the band to do this. It has sincerely been a long time since I’ve heard such an unmitigated mess of an album like this, an offering both boring and unkempt.
The trio from Australia had my hopes up high that quite possibly a successor to Hobbs’ Angel of Death might come from down under, but the music on Devil’s Poison is so inconsistent and all over the place it gave me a headache! I’m familiar with the primitive sound when producing these thrash bands, a la early Sodom, Motorhead, and Venom, but at least the music in those cases was played coherently and well-enough to entertain me. The over-glorified garage band sound here is too scattering to even grasp effectively. One song meshes, well, more like crashes into the other, and I honestly found it laborious to get through. The guitars are sloppy and the vocals are amazing lessons in futility all over. The only bright spot was the drumming, and even that was a stretch, but at least he was on time.
To be perfectly honest, I can’t even think of anything positive to relay, save for the obviously cool titles of the songs themselves. In fact, the only reason I gave this any points at all was the cover, far too cool for the music therein. Save your money on this one, people. It’s an utter disappointment from the first out-of-tune chord to the last note, which I thought was merciful on the band’s part.
