CONCERT REPORT
Metal is like Hollywood in a sense.  When a director makes a great movie or several great movies, production companies will never turn said director down, regardless of how ridiculous his new idea for a movie might be.  You’ve seen the trailers: “from director so-and-so” or “from the mind of what’s-his-name comes Pile of Shit starring big-time actor.”  You think, “Damn, I really liked what’s-his-name’s Great Movie fifteen years ago, so this has potential.”  Then you leave the theater trying to make excuses for the movie and how it wasn’t “that bad” but at the end of the day, it’s just what the title implied.  In metal, this happens quite often and generally with the same result.  2010’s addition to this subject is Trident, starring Johan Norman of Storm of the Light’s Bane-era Dissection, and fronted by Tobias Sidegard, of Necrophobic notability, and the result is just another highly generic and clichéd blackened death album to further flood the market.

For starters, they’re called Trident (along with several other bands), and the album title is World Destruction.  I mean, were they even trying?  Why not just call the album World Go Boom or something else equally inane?  Well, three or four tracks into the album and the answer to my first question would be a resounding “no.”  World Destruction is an album full of blast beats, truly forgettable riffs and not one inkling of anything even approaching being memorable.  This album was difficult to listen to because my mind would wander no matter how hard I tried to concentrate.  Marduk’s Panzer Division thinks this is boring.  At least that album was only thirty minutes; World Destruction is almost fifty minutes, with a few tracks over seven!  Are you kidding me?  Dark Funeral thinks you’re being ridiculous.

The sad thing is that labels like Regain will sign this tripe because if they don’t, someone else will in a heartbeat.  I hate to play the “with so many truly talented, unsigned bands out there” card, but in cases like this, it’s even more evident and noticeable.  Trident will have the luxury of using state-of-the-art recording studios and very proficient engineers (Andy La Rocque, Nico Elgstrand), endless press and hype (the “about” section on their Myspace page is pure comedy), super slick packaging that will probably come with some pointless DVD, and guaranteed spots on national tours and fests.  Not because of what they are, but who they are.  Do yourself a favor and skip this.
