Six Feet Under - Wake The Night! Live In Germany (DVD)
Shot back in 2009 at the Party San Open Air Festival, Six Feet Under decide to unload a hefty set of material on the crowd. With a widescreen presentation, a killer sound mix except for Terry Butler’s bass and a striking performance, Wake the Night! Live in Germany proves to be their de facto video and live release.
This is all killer, absolutely no filler. Vocalist Chris Barnes’ guttural gurgle and squeals sound fantastic and guitarist Steve Swanson lays down some dense riffs. Unfortunately, Butler’s bass is somewhat buried only faintly appearing during guitar solos. Greg Gall’s drums are nice and hot in the mix but not overpowering. Performance wise, Six Feet Under looks and sounds tight. While Barnes has little crowd interaction, he spices up a few of the songs with more squeals than their studio counterparts. He really cranks out great energy and even pushes his vocals on “The Enemy Inside” and set closer “Beneath the Black Sky.”
With 3 concerts already available on DVD, Wake the Night! Live in Germany has not only the best production, but the best set list for fans of the bands earlier material. With 7 songs from Haunted and 3 from Maximum Violence, it’s pretty clear Six Feet Under knows which songs are their strongest. No material from Bringer of Blood was a wise choice but it seems 2008’s tremendous Death Rituals doesn’t get a fair shake with only 2 songs on the set list.
The only gripe of the DVD is that there is just a concert. It seems like some of the band’s videos could have been tacked on as extras. But Wake the Night! Live in Germany now also proves to be the last release from a once solid line-up as both Terry Butler and Greg Gall resigned right after the DVD release. At least they went out on a strong note. Perhaps the release will prove to be an end of an era for the band as Barnes and Swanson have promised to tweak the band’s formula for the next studio release. Either way, Wake the Night! Live in Germany is essential for fans of Six Feet Under, especially fans of their debut release.
