When one thinks of thrash metal the last place on earth you might consider it emerging from is the tropical island nation of Maldives. It just goes to prove that every thing of beauty has something hideous and demented…like our friends in Serenity Dies. Following the full-length from 2006 titled Murder the latest offering from this four-piece outfit is an EP titled Hacksawcrasy, a testament to the depth of rage thrash metal has for its legions.

Taking a page from the Slayer book, this just-under-thirty-minutes bashing can kick in your head just as easily as it can entertain the hell out of you. With some serious thrashing ability, Serenity Dies lends its name to an overcrowded, yet still relevant genre on the very brink of oversaturation. While the latest resurgence in thrash metal seems to be bordering on trend more than historical lineages some bands still manage to create some interesting music in the face of such opinionated adversity. For its part Serenity Dies does little to recreate the genre but doesn’t offer trite or boring music either.

“Dystopian Law” rages like a late 80’s battle of the bands show with a few hundred people moshing on the floor. There are some really strong moments during this EP, especially evident in “Bullet Reign”, “Blood Serenade”, and the already mentioned “Dystopian Law”. For the money, you can be seriously entertained with Serenity Dies; the band is putting its island nation on the map with thrash metal that, while typical, is highly enjoyable. The production on the EP is pretty top-notch, leaving every instrument mixed to an audible peak.

Comparing the band to any of the other thrash bands in existence would be futile as the thrash movement is pretty self-explanatory in its sound and design. What you have heard from the good thrash bands for the past thirty years pretty much represents the Serenity Dies sound; it’s good metal that makes you want to hit walls at random and destroy the neighbor’s award-winning garden out back with a rusty hoe.

Agriculture be damned, Maldives thrash metal makes for good metal.
