Revolting is another project manned by the ultra-prolific progenitor of old school Swedish death metal, Rogga Johansson.  A decidedly polarizing character in the genre, I’ve heard him slandered as an unoriginal hack, whilst I eagerly anticipate the next release from whichever of his bands is presently functioning.  Chances are pretty good you know whether or not this album is for you already.  Simplistic even for the classic Swedish death sound, Revolting crank out track after track of buzzing, lively, quintessentially Razorback sounding d-beat death metal much like Rogga’s Ribspreader, a name under which The Terror Threshold and last year’s excellent debut Dreadful Pleasures may as well have been released.  This is the kind of death metal three dudes with small amps and a chintzy no-frills five piece drum kit could kick out in their garage over a long afternoon of slamming beers, and to be honest, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised or perturbed if that’s exactly how this album was created.  There’s a lot of material here as the track list is beefed up by the addition of an unreleased EP called Bonesaw Leftovers, so we get 17 tracks of expectedly tongue-in-cheek odes to grotesquery, bear attacks, undead whores, and many, many depictions of various acts of bodily mutilation.  Sure I can understand how the lack of dimension, depth, or forethought might cause some to write the band off as a mere novelty and to be honest it does really all start to sound the same, but personally I couldn’t be happier than to throw this on, slam my head, and buzz out to the thick, grooving, rocked out riffs Rogga and Revolting spew my way.
