CONCERT REPORT

The female fronted metal scene is loaded with many bands trying to make names for themselves. More often than not though, many of the bands end up being unable to distinguish themselves, whether it is by choice or not. One band that seeks to separate from the pack is Finland’s My Reflection, who are also seeking a record label. In the meantime, they’re putting in the work to make that happen, and the result so far is in the form of their debut album Be My Eyes.
My Reflection refers to themselves as “rock metal,” which sounds like an oxymoron until you realize that it’s not that unusual. In fact, My Reflection can look to fellow country folk in Lullacry for inspiration. The rock element of My Reflection’s sound is evident the moment the guitars kick in for “Higher than All,” elements that include the “hey” chants mid-song. Lead vocalist Lumi shows decent range and considerable talent, which is combined with the growling male vocals that at times, negates the overall effect of the band’s music. The male vocals seem to take away from what is otherwise, a strong point on the album. Musically, there is some keyboard soloing to go along with the steady diet of guitars to make things a little interesting, as evidenced on “Stand Again.” However, for all of the positives, it just seems that My Reflection is going through the motions instead of going all out. In fact, compositions such as “Hero” and the title track tend to follow a paint by numbers approach favored by the likes of Lacuna Coil and Evanescence, something that gets newer bands lost in the shuffle.
My Reflection has the talent to make a respectable showing, and at times, it shows on Be My Eyes. However, they have to show less restraint when it comes to making music, something that will happen over time. For now, My Reflection is a band to keep an eye on, and nothing more.
