CONCERT REPORT
Malveillance - Vaches Sacrées
October 27, 2010
Reviewer: J. A. Burt
Quebec’s enigmatic single-member nihilism factory Malveillance has, over the years, taught us many things about hate.  Hatred perhaps originally unfortunately directed, but always of a caliber unattainable by most, and eventually employed to scorn the true enemies afoot: society and, of course, ourselves.  New recordings of this fury, sparse as they tend to be, are always cause for cautious celebration.  Having significantly shifted styles mid-career from a torturous, anguished depressive approach to black metal, to a frenzied and frantic blown-out blackened punk terror, monsieur F showed us that hate needn’t necessarily mope about frowning, feeling sorry for one’s self.

New demo recording Vaches Sacrées (Crowned Cows) was a bit of a surprise upon initial listens as it contains two songs of six minutes in length and practically sounds like masterpiece Just Fuck Off playing at the wrong speed.  12 minutes of Malveillance used to mean at least 8 tracks.  Indeed, the pendulum has swung back and Malveillance is again exploring the bleak landscapes of dispirit and despair.  Melody, something of a dirty word for a while when thinking of Malveillance, has crept back into the sound, and while “Corps Morts” is an enjoyable dirge, and the material is as well played and written as one can expect, the style (think of, perhaps, Xasthur without the ridiculous absurdity) just doesn’t thrill with the same simplistic primal magnitude.  F doesn’t give a fuck what I think and would most likely spit on me for it, but I miss and absolutely prefer the fuzzed out total anarchy and Ramones covers of the last few releases.
