Krisiun - Southern Storm
November 29, 2008
Reviewer: Jesse
Another year should bring us at least one year closer to another Krisiun album and it just so happens that 2008 is that year. Probably the most well-known South American death metal band, Krisiun has been a touring and album-writing machine for close to fifteen years and what’s equally impressive is that they’ve managed to keep the same lineup for virtually the entire time. Granted, the three of them are brothers, but it’s still not easy to keep that nucleus together for so many years. In fact, one might argue that three brothers would fight even more than typical band mates, but anyway.
Southern Storm is their seventh or eighth full-length album depending on whether or not you consider Bloodshed a full-length. Either way, this Brazilian death machine has once again created a brutal album that is every bit Krisiun and zero frill. Still heavy as ever with tons of rhythmically blasting snares. I would never say that Krisiun employs “blast beats,” rather; they have a more “marching-beat-played-really-fast” style that is trademark Krisiun. I can always tell it’s them from their style of drumming. Even on the horrendously produced Ageless Venomous, that style is clear as day.
One who might be looking for a certain wrinkle or change-of-pace on Southern Storm will have to look elsewhere because Krisiun is not about to step outside of the box, not just yet anyway. That of course is a love/hate quality that many bands deal with these days. Why fix what isn’t broken? Krisiun knows who they are and what they want to sound like and are very content with it and I for one appreciate it. I do however like the addition of the cover song that they started a few albums ago and this time it’s Sepultura’s “Refuse Resist” which they do extremely well.
As predictable as Krisiun might be, one thing no one can rip them for is being a slouch on stage. Krisiun is one of the most intense and incredible three-piece bands you will ever see in the live setting and it’s this element in which I believe is why they have had such a strong following.
