Invection - Derealization EP
Chris likes thrash metal. Chris likes thrash metal even more when it’s good thrash metal, and as we all know, a happy Chris is a safe Chris.
Invection is the current answer to the U.S. thrash problem. That is, we’re not nearly as prolific as we used to be turning out good thrash bands, which is a teaser to the brain since, well, IT STARTED HERE! Whew…rant over! All I can say is, pound for pound, you absolutely need to hear Invection, people! I have the Derealization EP going in my stereo right now (on its third play) and I’m jacked up beyond belief, it’s that good! With three EP’s and two demos under their collective belt, Cali’s answer to the rash of overseas bands claiming the mantle for thrash might be turning back the tide. Between Invection and Judgment Hammer from Montana it amazes me how good these young guys are these days.
Derealization is four songs of unflinching, near-perfect thrash metal that borders on a bit of crossover sound without completely making the switch. Vocalist/Guitarist Andrew Kubiak has that oh-so great vocal delivery that melodically yells ala Billy Milano (though with much more precision), not to mention the brain-bending shredding from Kubiak and guitarist Drew Gage. Not to be left out is bassist Andy Lindquist, who provides a serious Greg Christian feel. Where thrash metal has failed to amplify its existence in the last few years in a sea of imitators, Invection takes the sub-genre to a viable, enjoyable plateau. The naysayers out there are possibly bitter old men, much like me, but hopefully hearing this EP will at least bring them back to a time when the States ruled the thrash/death scene unchallenged.
The production values on this EP are stellar throughout, especially the drums, as John Haag does a terrific job. He might be able to give Lars Ulrich some updated lessons in the latter’s old age. Seriously, while there is no rediscovering electricity here, the people that down thrash bands as rudimentary and the same old, same old are understandably bitter that, truthfully, our young days are behind us. We dismiss a lot of bands for not reinventing the genre, an utterly impossible standard to live up to for anyone. The fact that these kids are out there making a difference and keeping the scene vital and alive should say something. When they’re as well-crafted and talented as Invection we should embrace it and be happy the next generation has relit the flame! Invection has what it takes and I sincerely hope you give them some attention.
I won’t name standouts; the entire EP is a standout of no-nonsense thrash metal that should impress you if you understand the thrash metal medium and realize that as long as it’s done correctly and with the talent these young men have we’re in capable hands, my friends!
Chris is a happy camper today…the world is safe another day.
