Insomnium - One for Sorrow

Finland’s Insomnium has gained a fairly large following since the 2006 release of Above the Weeping World, which was coupled with a 2007 fall tour as an opening band for Katatonia. However, that hasn’t catapulted the band to the heights that were expected, even after another solid release in 2009 with Across the Dark. Fast forward to this year, and a new record label in Century Media coincides with a new album in One for Sorrow. Hype surrounding this album has been at its highest for Insomnium, so naturally, expectations are high.
The intro “Inertia” is one of the few serene points on One for Sorrow before Insomnium begins its melodic death metal assault on the listener’s ears. With its clean guitar lines and a mostly harsh vocal attack that also utilizes clean vocals in opportune spots, Insomnium is ready for the spotlight, and One for Sorrow continues this consistency that the band has developed over the years. “Only One who Waits” is an atypical track for Insomnium in the sense that it goes all out for a thundering sound, as opposed to making music to get the desired emotion out of the listener, though there are still elements familiar to the band in the song late in the song, complete with a guitar solo that isn’t overpowering, yet will draw out emotions. “Decoherence” provides a relief from the assault with a soothing guitar instrumental before “Lay the Ghost to Rest” emerges with the raw emotion that Insomnium is known for in its music. The title track is a little contrived in terms of getting the emotions out of the listener, but it is a good way to close out the album. A limited edition version of the album comes with the bonus track “Weather the Storm.”
Overall, One for Sorrow is another solid album from Insomnium, who is quickly gaining a reputation for being one of the best melodic death metal bands today. While not as great as Across the Dark, Insomnium more than meets expectations when it comes to their Century Media debut, and certainly, people new to the band, as well as long time fans, will like what they hear on One for Sorrow.
