CONCERT REPORT
Impiety - Advent of... EP
The mighty Impiety seemingly so does little wrong these days. The Singapore black metal outfit plows its way through yet another solid offering of blasphemous tracks in service to all that is evil and foreboding. The current EP Advent of… is no exception. Coming off Worshippers of the Seventh Tyranny, one long At War with Satan epic song that far surpasses its predecessor, my hopes were high for anything else by this band.

Sticking to the original concept of blasting hellish tunes without frivolity or predictability, Impiety hits hard with that familiar down-tempo destruction of the senses that makes them one of the more underrated bands in the black thrash metal scene. Within three songs the band leaves me wanting even more, which is a recurring theme with these guys. “Advent of Nuclear Baphomet” is volatility set to music on all counts, while the melodic evil comes by way of “Ave Satanas”, a tempestuous track that harkens a very mid-80’s black feel with slight edges of some mid-90s death that doesn’t lose itself halfway in. It speeds along at a really energetic fray, but leaves enough room for melody and structure that, sadly, lacks in many bands attempting black thrash. Impiety makes these bands appear laughable and sad in three simple, yet well-crafted tunes. “Blood Ritual Defamation” is really a chaotic song filled with peripheral noise that adds perfect dimness to the aura of the song and the EP. All of these songs, while certainly differing, are part-and-parcel with the mood of the EP, another element often missing in many offerings today by lesser bands that need to just give up. Black thrash never sounded so alive and fresh, that’s a fact!

Impiety takes no prisoners and keeps on surpassing my expectations. Suffice it to say, the band is always impressive and Advent of…is a fine addition to the already-impressive line.
