CONCERT REPORT
Godless - Ecce Homo: Post Lux Tenebras, Pulsio XIII Ultima Ratio
December 15, 2010
Reviewer: Chris
Chilean death metal emerges from its murky, down-tuned glory and spits out vermin by way of Godless and its first full-length Ecce Homo: Post Lux Tenebras, Pulsio XIII Ultima Ratio. Upon initial consumption it sounds as if the band is going for more of a death/doom feel in the songs; the slow, seemingly syrupy efforts in some of the tracks might bode well for fans of the genre, but for others it might serve as mere distraction.

Yes, Godless plays death metal; yes, Godless channels some of the guttural wails and low-fi guitar work; no, sadly, there is nothing grand or original or resonating about this album. It’s not necessarily even decent death metal more as it seems to be rehashed, recycled jargon other bands might well leave on cutting room floors. While not exactly pieced together, this album leaves little aftertaste and is about as bland as eating uncooked spaghetti. When you take in a band’s CD and find yourself counting the minutes for it to be over, it’s usually not a good sign, and that’s pretty much the Godless effort in a nutshell.

“Necroaisthesis” has some okay moments of darkness and brutality, but it comes at a point where a slow-down, completely unwarranted and flow-breaking, pops in and destroys the feel of the song. At this point it’s time to pick a genre and stick with it. Another point of contention is the absolutely blah guitar solos that are utterly lifeless and uninspired, providing more distraction than actual enhancement. In the grand schematic that has become death metal, bands issuing music of such low caliber only serve to waste valuable time on many fronts, most importantly their own. This isn’t even close to viable.
