Demonical - Death Infernal
Reviewer: Rottenbucher
August 18, 2011
Boasting former members of Centinex and current members of both Grave and Diabolical, Demonical is pedigree Swedish Death Metal. So much so that their third album, Death Infernal, sounds like the hell spawn of Dismember and Vomitory.
Unleashing a swirling assault of grinding guitars and a pounding beat, Demonical is well armed on “The Arrival of Armageddon.” “Return in Flesh” continues the pace and vocalist Sverker Widgren (Diabolical) displays a fantastically crisp yet guttural roar. The band injects subtle moments of melody that put a bit of personality on the assault. However, “Black Inferno” finds the band really expanding the melodic horizons. The added hooks give the track a sizeable bite and Demonical proves they can sound twice as heavy if they slow it down in a few spots too.
“Ravenous” increases the barbaric slant and throws in some quick blasts courtesy of Ronnie Bergerstahl (Grave, ex-Centinex). Even the haunting melody barely audible beneath the chaos doesn’t prevent this track from being one of the album’s most aggressive moments. “March for Victory” slow things down into more marching groove that allows more room for the riffing to breathe and even a longer than usual solo from Johan Jansson (ex-Centinex). The pace kicks up tenfold on “Through Hellfire.” Back up to full speed and negating melody, the track rips along viciously before doing a complete about face into Doom territory before getting back to full on Death again. “All Will Perish (The Final Liberation)” shows the band expanding into a variety of tempos and melancholic moods while injecting a bit of melody into the mix. “Slain Warriors” returns the aggression but shows pure class by allowing room for some shredding in the middle. Death Infernal grinds to a close on the Dismember clone “Darkness Awaits.” While the melodic riffs and barbaric grooves aren’t very original, they are wickedly contagious and the song’s closing moments show keen craftsmanship.
Death Infernal isn’t original. But while is doesn’t break any new ground for the genre, it is an exceptionally sold Swedish Death Metal release with no dull moments or soggy spots. While faster than Grave, less melodic than Dismember and with just enough heft to approach the slower side of Vomitory, Death Infernal is essential for fans of ballsy Swedish Death Metal. Recommended.
