The demonic heir of Elvis is back. Glenn Danzig, the face and voice of Danzig and his band mates are ready to show the world that they (but more specifically, that he) hasn't lost his mojo from the early days of the band. Rising to popularity in the midst of the glam rock era, Danzig won many many fans over with the MTV classics "Mother," and "Her Black Wings" from the Danzig II: Lucifuge album and continued on like a heavy metal Sinatra from there, continually selling albums and shows just on name alone.

By the time a musician like Glenn Danzig has reached the level of cult status he has, the question of sales somewhat becomes a moot point - meaning that there is a core fan base that will always buy the latest album just because it is Glenn Danzig. Add to that his Verotik comic book company (among many other ventures) and it's no wonder that many of his die-hard fans seem to be wondering whether or not he really cares about the music anymore. But I feel confident in saying that the latest, Deth Red Sabaoth will give even the most disenfranchised fan hope that the band's focus is back on the music.

When you listen to the entire album, I'm pretty sure that you will be thinking the same way I did: I hope the entire album isn't like the first single. Thankfully, it isn't, but I'm still finding myself incredibly unimpressed with the first single, "On a Wicked Night." I personally felt it was lame and a little too watered down from what I personally have come to expect from the band. As far as the rest of the album goes, I'm actually pretty satisfied with the end result, with the overall sound coming off like a hybrid between the Danzig 4p album and Danzig 7:77 : I, Luciferi. Though I did somewhat find myself questioning the "Black Candy" track. With lyrics like "My candy is so hard to find," being repeated incessantly and coming from Glenn Danzig, I was a little thrown. While I understand the imagery he's going for with the song, it seems a little too innocent compared to previous songs he has penned in the past.

While this is one of the band
s best releases in a number of years (my most recent favorite being I, Luciferi), this new one still leaves a little something to be desired when compared the bands first two releases (Danzig and Lucifuge), the tracks "Hammer of the Gods," and "Rebel Spirits" definitely echo back to the old days, while "Ju Ju Bone" feels a little more reminiscent of later releases (the above mentioned I, Luciferi specifically). The meshing of these two distinct sounds giving the album more of a career-recap feel than a new album entirely. This is fine, because it gives the album a little something for everyone, and includes fans both old and new.

In the end, I feel that most fans will be at least satisfied, if not entirely happy about this latest Danzig offering. It is an excellent example of Glenn's versatility, talent and stamina as both an artist and as to why he is one of the true God-Fathers of Metal.
