Cerekloth is a relatively new Danish death metal band, and yet another in a long line of bands producing new songs in the old style that’s so revered these days. That came off a little more bitter than it was meant to really, as I am absolutely a great fan of the style of death metal that was prominent at the formation of the genre, and to be honest, Cerekloth does a pretty damn good job of cranking out some thrashy mid-paced stuff. As Pandemonium Prayers is just an EP, it’s kind of over before you really get a chance to get into it, but despite its brevity, it manages to get your head to start to bang, and then it’s done. This is the CD version of what was originally a 7” record, and I have to imagine that it fared better on vinyl, though I’ve read that the audio on the vinyl master was flawed in some manner or other. Bummer. The audio on this CD version is nice and warm, and the band is extremely well produced. The riffs are catchy and somewhat upbeat sounding, and the use, at times, of multiple vocal registers/tracks adds some cool effects, but unfortunately there’s not really anything too groundbreaking on display here. It chugs along fine and is certainly a tasty morsel of standard early style death metal, but it leaves you wanting more, and I’m not convinced that its short running time is the only reason. Still, it’s well executed and sincere, and is definitely going to please fans of death metal from a simpler time.
