CONCERT REPORT

Those of you that have picked up Cannibal Corpse’s newest DVD will probably wonder why the track list was not put on the back. Well, it’s not because there aren’t any live performances rather that Global Evisceration plays like one of Manowar’s Hell on Earth DVDs. You get a live track, then the members of Cannibal Corpse as tourists or trying to sleep between shows. There’s a concert worth of material in there intermingled between a casual documentary of the band on their world wide tour for their latest disc.
And that is where Global Evisceration is a little odd. The first time through, watching Alex Webster wear his geek badge while touring prisons and scenic locales, it’s pretty cool and somewhat comical. Plus it is wild to see Cannibal Corpse play a festival with Six Feet Under and Nevermore, as it is a huge reunion. Also members of Megadeth and Fear Factory show up too. But honestly, the guys of Cannibal Corpse seem way too friendly to play the music they do. And the candid interviews on the road really show just how normal these guys are. But repeat viewings of Global Evisceration aren’t as rewarding as you have to skip around to catch the music. Cannibal Corpse isn’t as funny or bombastic as Manowar. Nor are their fans as silly. So watching band and fan exploits between songs doesn’t work as well for them.
What is nice about Global Evisceration is the less-frequently played material featured. “Scattered Remains, Splattered Brains” almost sounds out of place style-wise as Cannibal Corpse has really progressed from being a chunky Slayer. Also, “The Cryptic Stench” is fantastic seeing Corpsegrinder scream previously gurgled lyrics. Also, according to the band, “Stripped, Raped and Strangled” is one of their most popular tracks and “Hammer Smashed Face” is their “Angel of Death.”
Both recorded shows from Denver and Albuquerque are mixed together to make one semi-complete show, but there are a few snippets of songs from the European festivals. The bonus songs almost give a full set list but is does seem like a few songs were omitted. While not as complete tight as Live Cannibalism or exhaustive as the docu-collection Centuries of Torment, the vast majority of Cannibal Corpse fans will dig Global Evisceration. Casual fans are better off picking up one of their previous DVD releases first.
