Bloodwritten - Thrashin’ Fury
While most bands residing in the unholy household of blackened thrash metal are more or less just playing straightforward black metal with the addition of a few elements of thrash, little known Polish destroyers Bloodwritten play what is essentially pure thrash with a blackened edge to the vocals. After the fantastic, and criminally underrated 2008 album Iniquity, Intensity, Insanity, and a short teaser EP in early 2010, Bloodwritten returns with their new album Thrashin’ Fury which delivers in its aim to thrash effectively, but unfortunately falls a bit short of its predecessor.
Perhaps most unfortunate is that the two best songs on the album (“Whore” and “Bullet Overdose”) were the two new songs showcased on the Whore EP earlier this year. That’s not to say, however, that the tracks aren’t worthy of our praise. Both very plainly display Bloodwritten’s knack for writing extremely catchy, gratifying thrash songs, and contain exhilarant riffing, and a nice lasting quality missing from much of the thrash generated these days. Also disappointing is the fact that the production quality this time around sounds a little thin, and seems a bit too clean, serving to somewhat castrate the acidic barbarity that helped make the preceding full-length so enjoyable. Show No Mercy era Slayer is a huge point of reference for the band musically, and “Watch the World Burn” seems to borrow a page from the big-4 member’s “Black Magic” creating a nice classic sounding head-banger, and “Radiation” continues with Bloodwritten’s penchant for hooks, but the album suffers a little from an almost laid back quality to much of the playing. Bloodwritten is a solid thrash band and Thrashin’ Fury is an album sure to please classic thrash fans, but I think they just may have lost a bit too much of the unhinged, malevolent wickedness necessary to hold most black metal fans’ attention these days. Here’s to hoping they reclaim some of that evil for future works.
