Beltfed Weapon - Peacekeeper
Washington State’s metal outfit Beltfed Weapon offers up its second EP of thrash/death metal titled Peacekeeper. In line with the supreme patriotic sentiments of the last decade, Peacekeeper is a 20-minute melodic recruitment drill to American patriotism that is, at times, reminiscent of some Sodom work, though not as fast and a bit more polished.
It’s nice to see that some nine-years after 9/11 some metal bands are still waving the flag and calling out the enemies accordingly. For the subject matter the music moves along much in the same way an allied tank might moves through Fallujah: unrelenting, fast, though slightly unsteady. Rampant guitar work and some decent vocals make Peacekeeper a definite thrash experience that might impress some of the genre’s more staunch supporters. It’s definitely an interesting appetizer for sure, with some moments of brutal musical maneuvers such as with “Terrorist Scum”, a true thrash song in every sense of the word.
While there are some very strong metal moments, there’s also a bit of familiarity that periodically can rise above the hum-drum and carbon-copy elements of the scene, but it’s few and far between. What saves Peacekeeper from just that sort of triviality are songs like the title track and “The Brutalizer”, which is a speedy kick to the throat while attempting to remove shrapnel from a fallen comrade’s neck. It’s my favorite track on the EP for its sheer heavy-paced delivery and design.
As a whole Peacekeeper is pretty good, but like I said there is much of the same line of thrash work being offered here, so if you don’t mind the little nuances of such a release then certainly seek out Beltfed Weapon, a seriously American band. There are some great moments here if you don’t mind a little of much of the same in the thrash lineage.
