CONCERT REPORT
Since 2007, the Russian folk metal band Arkona (not to be confused with a few other bands that share the same name, but are black metal) has been on a roll.  For those who have been following them earlier than that, it has gone on longer than that.  So, what is a band to do to take some of the pressure off of themselves?  Why, release an EP that shows the band’s playful side, and Arkona does just that with the Stenka Na Stenku EP.

The EP begins with the title track, which is a more upbeat Arkona than what has been on their last two albums in general.  The one constant in all of this: lead vocalist Masha “Scream,” who doesn’t miss a beat despite the relaxed atmosphere.  Also on the EP is a fun folk song in “Valenki” (which is the Russian equivalent of boots), the acoustic version of “Goi, Rode, Goi,” a Svarga cover in “Duren,” and a Shaman cover in “Noviy Mir,” as well as the song “Skå,” with Freki of Varg contributing on vocals.  Much of the EP is what you would expect from an Arkona release, only with a less serious tone.  If you’ve heard any of Arkona’s albums at all, then there is practically nothing on Stenka Na Stenku that should surprise you.  All of the songs on the EP showcase the band’s solid musicianship, distinct vocals that command your attention, and folk instruments that add to the band’s distinct native sound.  All of the tracks are surprisingly strong, and with the exception of the acoustic version of “Goi, Rode, Goi,” this EP is the first time that the listener will have had an opportunity to hear any of the songs in any form.  There isn’t much wrong with the EP, suggesting that Arkona takes to this release almost like their other releases: with passion and seeking nothing short of perfection.

Arkona has been a busy band since they joined Napalm Records a few years ago.  Stenka Na Stenku is the band’s loosest release musically, but it fits with the band’s discography just as well as its full-length and live album counterparts.  Rarely does an EP merit any kind of consideration for album of the year honors, but Stenka Na Stenku merits this distinction that only The White EP from Agalloch has been able to match.  Stenka Na Stenku is a perfect EP for the first time Arkona listener to get into, but it is also a perfect EP for the Arkona fan in your life, that is, if you haven’t already claimed it for yourself.
