Every metal fan has a few labels they can be almost certain to enjoy just about every release from.  This is usually due, in part, to labels developing their distinct sound and identity through the often similar records they release.  Nuclear War Now!, along with others like Profound Lore and Hells Headbangers are those labels for myself.  Ares Kingdom sort of sticks out on the NWN! label.  Not to the extent of say a sore thumb, or Jungle Rot on Napalm, but their incredible death thrash definitely stands out a bit from the rest of the unholy (amazing) filth on the roster reminding that an entire label need not sound so similar to remain trustworthy to dispense the high quality goods.  I’ve often marveled at why Ares Kingdom isn’t better known in the metal realm as they’re unbelievably talented and have released what is absolutely one of the best albums of 2010 in the scathing, uncompromising Incendiary.

There are more amazing, powerful, and memorable riffs on this album than there were in all of metal in the six months following its release in January.  Incendiary is essentially a master-class in razor-edged, fervent thrash with none of the gimmicky faux-retro inanity currently plaguing much of the genre.  I’m talking RIFFS.  They really just keep coming one after another here strung together with a precise intelligence the vast majority of bands simply cannot hope to match.  I mean, the main riff in “The Destruction of Sennacherib” is by far one of the most sonically pleasing things I’ve heard all year and the song is pretty much an interlude.  Yes.  An interlude on this album smokes entire albums this year by bloated thrash-beens and uninspired youngsters both.  Incendiary also accomplishes something rather unique in the death/thrash metal world by remaining completely engaging for its entire length.  Expect total enthrallment from the explosive opening title track to album closer “Abandon in Place” which is one of the strongest tracks on the album (Those Riffs!!!!).  Also impressive, and surely a testament to their talent is the fact that the band can more than keep the listener’s attention for seven and eight minute tracks.  Much of this ability is derived from their adeptness at varying tempos but it’s really those monster riffs that simply keep you unendingly involved.

Incendiary is a modern classic, and is an absolute must own.  Do yourself a favor.  You deserve it.
