While I’m not above the “kvlt” and primitive sounds of the early 80’s Bathory, Venom or Bulldozer boom-box production, sometimes you just need to hear some good music played in decent audibility. Such is the case with Angrepp’s Warfare CD, which is a distinct effort to placate the oldsters and youngin’s alike with a fast-slow-fast-heavy assault fitting for the band’s moniker (Angrepp is ‘assault’ is Swedish). It’s pretty good music overall.

After the Prepare for Attack demo in ’06 Angrepp rises from the nearly four-year silence to come up with some really ballsy thrashing through a studio. While nothing overly-amazing is being touted here, Warfare is a half-hour plus of some decent tunes that have moments of definite thrash ability that can cause a few dents in the walls and some bloody noses from too much cranium dancing. Thrash metal used to be fun when Exodus had us toxic waltzing back when, and while this is hardly as light as the famous Souza belted anthem, the thrashing can be contagious. Vocalist Adrian Lawson sputters through a hoarse Tom G. Warrior effort that is very typical and thin yet fits the music to a proverbial tee.

“Rape, Kill, Rock n Roll” is a punky metal effort that has the ever-present traces of the Swedish black metal influence, yet manages to color right outside the lines of complete imitation. It’s a lot to ingest these days, this punk-thrash rippling emerging in semi-small numbers these days, but it can be heavy as hell and a lot of fun if done well.“Dead and Destroyed,” “Warfare,” and “Dictator” are the standouts for me, but the entire CD is a slim-styled, entertaining piece as it stands.

These guys would be great on a bill with some of the lesser known doom/black/thrash bands of today such as Black Breath, Hour of 13, Withershin or Serenity Dies. A bill like that could showcase some pretty good bands. There’s not a lot of serious patent-ready stylizing here, but Warfare wouldn’t be reduced to background noise while you putter around the garage. It’s pretty good music for the sake of those of us that enjoy the occasional break in the day for some thrash metal not exactly light in theme or texture but a good leap away from perfect.
