What's the general consensus to when Rush started sucking? Or to put it better, how far should I go into their discography. I've only ever heard the more popular tunes and all of Fly By Night and 2112. I like though.

Rush never really sucked - though they did have a few in the late 80s and early 90s that dipped in quality a little. I'd just start at the beginning

Thanks guys. I always start at the beginning, just wondered how far to go. I don't like the newer stuff I heard from them. A bit too... mainstream, if you know what I mean. I'll got at least as far as JC says as he and I have similar "older" music tastes, maybe a bit farther.

I would agree with JC that the last album I really love is Signals, but I really like the ones that followed it too. I've always been a pretty big fan of Hold Your Fire. Having said that, everything from Test for Echo (1996) onward is good, but not great IMO.

Britton: I just saw that Rush is releasing its discography in a 3 separate box sets at the end of November. The box sets are titled "Sector 1," "Sector 2," and "Sector 3." The albums are remastered, so the sound may suck. Anyhow, if they sound good it might be the way to go if you don't own any of Rush's stuff. Quote: On November 21, 2011, Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) celebrates the legacy of Canadian rock trio Rush with the release of three separate six-disc box sets which together spans their entire historic Mercury Records recording career. Each "Sector" contains five of their 15 Mercury albums in chronological order, all transferred to high resolution 96kHz/24-bit audio and digitally remastered for optimal quality. In addition, each volume includes an exclusive booklet packed with unpublished photos, original album lyrics and credits, and features one album from each set specially remixed on DVD in high resolution 96kHz/24-bit, 5.1 surround sound and stereo, compatible with both DVD-Audio players and DVD-Video players. Each album is packaged in a replica vinyl mini-jacket of the original album release with all three box sets forming a Rush CD road case.

I pre-ordered all 3 sectors. The box sets look awesome package-wise, are pretty cheap (46 bucks for 5 remastered CD's, book and a 5.1 surround mix of one album per set) and the set goes about as far into their discography as I wanna go.

I haven't been able to get into the last couple of Rush albums, but Fly By Night all the way to Test For Echo are good albums with Power Windows being the weakest during this time, in my opinion. Do not overlook the later 80's stuff, even with the cheesy synth layered throughout. Grace Under Pressure may be my favorite Rush album if you're curious to know.

Test for Echo and Roll the Bones are decent.

I have had all 3 Sector box sets for a week or so now, haven't had time to listen to them yet, but I am a bit bummed that the Fly By Night in this set is supposedly all fucked up for some people who bought it.
