K.I.N./Killer Is Nowhere  (2008)
The country of Turkey isn’t one of the first places people think of when it comes to black metal, let alone metal music in general.  However, the country that lies in two continents shouldn’t be overlooked because if one looks hard enough, there may be a gem or two.  In this case, that gem happens to be Moribund Oblivion, a band that has been around since 1999, yet hasn’t really gotten the recognition that they deserve outside of Europe.

American audiences will get their first taste of the band at Heathen Crusade Fest in November 2008.  Before the band embarked on their cross Atlantic journey, vocalist/guitarist Bahadir Uludaglar took some time to speak to Metal Psalter about the band, their upcoming album in K.I.N. (Killer is Nowhere), and their feelings and expectations about playing in the United States for the first time.

Peter: Since most people are unfamiliar with Moribund Oblivion, would you say a few things about the band?

Bahadir: Moribund Oblivion was formed by me, Bahadir Uludaglar, in the year of 1999. We are one the most well-known black metal bands in Turkey and in the last one to two years, we made a good reputation in Europe.  Besides, we aim to make people listen to Turkish Black Metal around the world.  We made lots of concerts, performed in lots of festivals in Turkey and Europe, and made five albums in the ten years of existence.

Peter: What are some of the band’s influences?

Bahadir: We make "Atmospheric Black Metal.”  There are lots of bands in this genre, so there is no need to mention all about them now.  Of course, all of us in the band have some favorite bands or musicians and we respect all of them, but we believe that we are different.

Peter: How would you describe the metal music scene in Turkey?

Bahadir: There are lots of fans of metal music in our country, and have been for many years.  People don’t know much about the metal music scene in Turkey, but it's not much different than the other countries in Europe. Like in Europe, there are lots of concerts and festivals in Turkey for metal music, and nearly all the bands in Turkey have taken their places on them for several times, including us.  Also, we have a role to make you hear this Turkish sound in black metal.

Peter: Moribund Oblivion is slated to have a new album out in a month or so. What are some of the details you can give about it and will there be distribution for the United States?

Bahadir: Our latest album "K.I.N [Killer Is Nowhere]" will be out on the first of December, from "Block Action Music (Germany)".  It will first be in music stores across Europe... Then, by the help of our distributor "New Music (Germany)", the album will be out in 2009 for USA, too. We claim that "K.I.N" is a tough album for black metal fans, and we believe that it will make an earthquake effect on Europe and USA.

Peter: Next month, Moribund Oblivion is scheduled to play at the Heathen Crusade Fest in the United States. How did the band get the call to play at the show and what can people expect from the band?

Bahadir: This will be our first show in the USA, but it won't be the last.  We expect more than this one, so we believe that in one to two years, we'll perform more in USA.  There are lots of differences between Europe and USA about the vision and the expectations for this music. I think that, after the release of our last album "K.I.N", we'll be popular in USA, too.

Peter: Since Heathen Crusade marks one of the first times that the band is playing in the United States, what are some of your hopes and expectations from this experience?

Bahadir: After Europe, starting to play in the USA is such a new discovery for us.  If everything goes right, we'll be appreciated while playing in the USA. Our previous concerts in Europe were great, but the culture of the music -especially for this sound- is very different between the USA and Europe, I think.  So we believe that we'll learn many things about the USA in the future.  As we did in Europe before, we do want you to listen our music in here, and being in USA will be fun for us.

Peter: Are there any other shows planned for the band?

Bahadir:  There will be another European tour in February '09. We did one this year, and it was cool.  So now, we try to concentrate for our performances in 2009, because we'll perform for many countries at various concerts and festivals in 2009.  You'll hear about all of them from our pages on the internet.

Peter: Anything else you would like to add before wrapping up the interview?

Bahadir:  We plan to make a great show for the USA, and we'll be pleased if it makes you listen to some Turkish Black Metal.  "K.I.N" is our latest and the best album, so we wish you would listen to it when it's in music stores in the USA.

Thank you.
