Lynora: Firstly, let’s get these lineup-change rumors alleviated: Did Nathaniel Carter leave the band due to marijuana issues, and just how much marijuana were you using?
James Malone: Personally myself I do not smoke pot, a couple of people on the tour do. We share the tour bus on this tour, and yes it is true first day of tour, he went to the back lounge smelled marijuana and uh yea-- took a train home. After the first show.
Lynora: What! Did he tell you guys he was leaving?
James: After the set I saw he and Nick arguing. And I was like what’s up and he said I’m taking the train home. I said Alright! I’m not going to try and stop you.
Lynora: Is new/old bassist Noah Martin back for good or just helping out for this tour?
James: Oh he’s back for good. He’s a wonderful guy.
Lynora: I hear that you recently had your first show in Latin America with Dying Fetus at the Eye Scream Metal Fest II, how was the response?
James: It was awesome, amazing, those fans were out of control… yea very enthusiastic.
Lynora: Where has the best response ever been/where is your favorite place to play?
James: I like playing Canada to be honest with you. Yea the shows we’ve playing in Canada especially on the Arch Enemy tour they were out of control. And this last show that was in Montreal was great as well.
Lynora: How have the fans responded to the new album Starve for the Devil?
James: I think it took a while for it to grow on people. But now I think it’s doing well. Why? I guess cause it was such a departure especially from the last album We are the Nightmare being what I would consider overly technical. But the new one has been doing well.
Lynora: What inspired the music and the title for the album?
James: Well I had some personal issues that I have struggled with on and off for a good number of years now but yea it was inspired by that. I’ve had a lot of problems with Anorexia and Bulimia for a good number of years now. So that’s that.
Lynora: How was it to be working and writing a new album again with original drummer Mike VanDyne?
James: Oh that was great! That was great; Mike and I have been friends for a really long time. It’s just really nice to have him around again to be honest with you.
Lynora: Initially I was hearing he wouldn’t be able to do tours because of his work, but that was a while ago. Is he good to go?
James: Yea, he’s not at this show, he was unable to do this tour but he uh did both the Arch Enemy and Behemoth tours.
Lynora: Were you excited to work again with Zeuss on this album?
James: Yea Zuess is awesome he’s a really good guy I consider him a friend at this point.
Lynora: How do you like touring with Dying Fetus and Misery Index?
James: I love those guys. This first tour we actually ever did was with Misery Index so it was really cool to see them again and hang out and stuff. And the Dying Fetus guys are all super laid back.
Lynora: Who has been your favorite band to tour with and why?
James: You know what, I would have to honestly say Arch Enemy. We had a blast on that tour and they are just really good people too. We ran into a bit of trouble in Canada we had our van vandalized not once but twice, and vandalism is not covered by the insurance. So they chipped in to help us out and get the van repaired.
Lynora: What’s next for Arsis?
James: Hopefully more touring and get ready to record another album in about a year in a half.
