other sets, was difficult to hear the further away from the bar stage. Next to hit the stage was Woods of Ypres, who had been experiencing a breakthrough of sorts, having been on the cover of Unrestrained! magazine earlier this year. Much of the band’s set largely stayed away from the Deepest Roots and Darkest Blues album, with only “Your Ontario Town is a Burial Ground” being played. The majority of the set focused on the earlier works, including all five songs off of the Against All Seasons demo.

One of the best sets of the weekend, Metsatöll made their Stateside debut a major success in the eyes of those fortunate enough to witness it. I missed the last of the three Nechochwen sets, which like all of his

Woods of Ypres
If your first experience with Woods of Ypres was Deepest Roots and Darkest Blues, then the band made sure that you would know all about what they had done before then. None of that would have mattered if the band didn’t do well, but given the expectations placed upon the band by the crowd that had waited to hear and see them live, they more than lived up to those expectations.
Closing out Heathen Crusade 3 was Moonsorrow. While the band needs no introduction, especially since they were at the first Heathen Crusade back in 2006, their appearance had more than one person anticipating this moment. Their set featured songs such as “Rauniolla,” “Jotunheim,” and, of course, “Kivenkantaja.” While it would have been interesting to see how they would have fit in songs from the V: Havitetty album, the crowd didn’t seem to mind, since they were singing along to the choruses of all the other songs.
A solid end to what was a very solid weekend of folk, Viking, and Pagan metal, Heathen Crusade 3 could be considered a success. Despite all of the drama leading up to the weekend, nothing could stop it from happening, and once it did, those troubles seemed to vanish. This was my first Heathen Crusade, which meant meeting new friends, as well as a few friends that I had not had the opportunity to meet before the event. Good music is always part of the deal, and put those things together, it makes for one great weekend. Hopefully, the next Heathen Crusade will be free of the things that almost made it not happen.
