Once again our office is usually inundated with bands sending in demos and promos for us to hear and judge with all of the bravado and acumen we humble souls can muster. While sifting through the sea of sounds on the seminal level, these five are what this unworthy writer finds to be a top find for the 2011 year:
Dirge Eternal - Within the Dark
With a total lack of pomp and ridiculousness, Finland’s Dirge Within takes the simplistic venture and creates an effective traditional/power sound that doesn’t rely on jargon to get across some wholly engaging music.
Keep those demos coming in and we’ll do our best to make sure the best of the best get the accolades and attention they richly deserve. As always, keep plugging away and finding the metal spirit a wonderfully secure shroud of shadow. See you in the new year!
Agartha - V
Black metal with some atmosphere from…Nashville? Yep, I wouldn’t have believed it either, but oh, does this demo have the dark lady’s seal of approval all over it. Adam Phillips is a budding genius in this area and I hope he keeps going with such tangible and well-read music!
House of Atreus - Demo I
With some very rush-worthy death metal that doesn’t subscribe to a formulaic design this new kid on the block has not only taken up residence but has started extorting from the local underlings. If you dig Arghoslent’s sound then you’ll have a firm grasp on what House of Atreus is offering. The break from the traditional sound sets these guys ina class by themselves and I can’t stress enough to watch for them to do bigger and deadlier things.

Death metal from the old Chicago club era is a much needed kick in the back as Brad Buldak and crew pummel the masses with five absolutely brutal tracks that won’t leave any hair on your neck. The beginning of great things lay here in this very serious foray into the dark, seedy underbelly of DM.
Absconder - Demo ’11

Immolate - Demo ’11
This band produces a mutt-like recording that touches hardcore, doom, thrash and death metal and makes it all seem effortless and vital throughout. This is a band to keep an eye peeled for as well as they don’t take themselves too seriously, but just enough to make you take notice.
