Cholera - Enslaved Humanity EP
It was a pretty strong year for underground up-and-comers. It was a true arduous effort to narrow it down to five, but here is what I think constitutes the best of the best for demos in 2010:
Pictura - Rebirth
Germany’s Pictura showcases a style along the lines of Opeth, defining true tenacity and resonance with three songs that should make a name for the band soon enough. Strong arrangements and time changes provide a unique listening experience that should appease both black metal fans and progressive thrash fans nicely. This was one of those happy surprises that cross the desk on rare occasions.
Two songs, nods to Dream Theater’s and Nevermore’s sound, pounding riffs and intricate proggy arrangements; this is what Cholera from Canada passes through your cranium like a Ziploc bag of rocks in a bad blender! The music is trippy, fast-paced prog-metal that can only get better. The band is working on a full-length and they should be just as exciting as they are on this demo. Really classic stuff!
So, it was tough, but that’s it for the year 2010. Keep sending those demos in and we’ll get to them as soon as inhumanly possible. Keep the underground alive by supporting the artist and spreading the word. See you all in ’11!
Pallbearer - Demo 2010
Doom, doom doom! And from Arkansas of all spots! This demo really shook my speakers with long, unflinching crunch that often made Sabbath look meek by comparison. When you say a band’s music is ugly, you just know it’s heavy duty metal. What Pallbearer provides is past ugly, venturing into Elephant Man territory. Some classic riffs and soaring, morose vocals make Pallbearer a band to keep an eye on.
Embers - Wrath Demo EP
The U.S. is producing some great things in the underground and Oakland’s Embers is right down there and should move up quickly. Dark and very shadowing, Wrath is a six-song journey into the deepest aura of the mind. With instrumentation that hits all the right spots, Embers manages a steady stream of consciousness and makes you feel every bit as moved as the music will allow. It truly is an enticing experience.
Winterburst - Winterburst
Out of the gate, France’s Winterburst took symphonic black metal to all new heights with its first demo. These are six tracks of unadulterated black metal that should be the cornerstone for good things from this band. I really had this one at the top of my repeated plays list for the last few months.
