CONCERT REPORT
Impio brings a black-death metal spin from Spain by way of the Begin demo that starts out with a pretty discerning intro aptly titled “Begin” that sounds sort of like an intro tape to one of a thousand concerts I’ve been to over the years. When “Dia De La Raza Cadaver” kicks in there’s a typical down-tempo drudging through a swamp of rehashed riffs and otherwise dull vocals that are the standard these days for every black metal band that tries in vain to be Incantation.

The bright spot of the demo is “Triumph of Death” that does manage to secure a very Swedish black metal sound if not for those annoying vocals. It’s almost like the guttural growl is too low for this type of black effort. When the singer manages a throaty scream it finds a better placement within the chord-disarray, but it’s always short-lived.

There’s just nothing very memorable here either in delivery or structure; it just reads like a blueprint for every underground band vying for a spot within the shadow of the Norwegian scene that is well past its initial importance.

Die Proud - Ask My Scars
Slovakia’s hardcore metal act Die Proud issues a four-track demo of good caliber thrash-death that might well sound like a dozen other bands of similar ilk, but that makes them no less entertaining. With some catchy riffs and brutal growling vocals that overlap with well-placed overdubs Ask My Scars doesn’t rewrite the manifesto, but it does manage to capture your interest nicely, especially with a hooking riff like the one in “The Waves of November Nights”. As a whole the demo is good friendly volatile fun that provides a rush of violent adrenaline where needed.

What might well be a run-of-the-mill hardcore/thrash hybrid by most diligent fans’ tastes does captivate to the point of remembering a riff for a while after it’s initially left your ears. As I say, there’s nothing overtly original anywhere, but at this point you go for resonance and entertainment value, which Ask My Scars does have for the fan of more mainstream death metal or hardcore.

1.  Iniquity of Bastard Saints  2.  Kneeling at the Altar of Excrement  3.  Rape Her to Death

Death metal from Texas pushes Scattered Remains my way through the 2010 demo, a three-song foray into brutal death metal that instantly kicks in the side of your head with a steel-toed military boot. There’s some real volatility in these three tracks, especially in “Kneeling at the Altar of Excrement,” which plows ahead like a malfunctioning hearse and just explodes on impact with a guard rail! The band plays well, constructs good songs and patterns and would probably be great in the live setting as well. The vocals are low growls, but not at all over-the-top or ineffectual.

Some of the slower aspects of Scattered Remains stick to the ribs as well, as in the slower, plodding of “Rape Her to Death,” which might actually resemble a forced encounter with its slow-then-fast-then-slow torturous movement, which might have been unintended but sets a perfect pace. Overall these guys are enjoyable and vital for the brutal death metal underground and it would be cool to hear more down the line.

Severe Infection - Dead Sluts & Rotten Cocks
Severe Infection from Canada solicits a severely brutal death metal demo in Dead Sluts & Rotten Cocks that might easily be deemed grindcore with the guttural vocal melody and speedy song structure, not to mention the violent, graphic lyrical content. What sets apart this band from the virtual planet of other death-grind bands is very little, but the overall talent and interest is here in some decent songs. Admittedly, I’m not impressed with vocals I can’t understand and wonder aloud at times why a band even bothers to write lyrics if they are to become indecipherable. With that said, I am still able to render a band worth something on the music alone.

There’s some pretty strong music on Dead Sluts throughout so the ability to trash out and force headbanging is certainly here. “Flesh on my Cock” has a great verse riff that creates a very sinister vibe within the song, and here is where the guttural vocals are actually vital in this regard. They manage to convey a seriously warped aura surrounding the song that one can only infer about when seeing the title.

These guys have some chops, that’s for sure, but if you’re looking for anything jumping out as definitive or new Severe Infection might not be what you seek. They certainly aren’t bad, though.
