Hatebreed
Up last was Hatebreed. Jamey Jasta came right out and addressed the backlash he was receiving for the odd pairing of Cannibal Corpse and Hatebreed for this tour. I admit I was thinking the same thing. But then all he had to say to clear it up for me was “Guys, Hatebreed,” he pointed to one spot on the floor, “And Cannibal Corpse,” he pointed next to it. “How don’t we fit?” And then suddenly, despite the huge gap in music, it did make perfect sense to me. I wanted to see both, so why not both in the same night? They played everything, every song I wanted to hear they played, and every time one started I though “oh damn this one too?” And would jump around. I don’t want to get old, but when I do, if I have offspring and little Corpsegrinder has offspring I can’t wait ‘til the day that they walk in on me cleaning the house listening to Hatebreed. “Grandma, what are you doing?” Little Timmy and Ginny will ask wide eyed and I just yell over Doomsayer, “Baby this is my song, make it louder! … There’s cookies cooling inside.”
Jamey Jasta finished a song and in a panic started pointing and leaning into the front of the crowd, “Is he alright? No is he ok? Is he ok? Dude you ok?” He finally got the thumbs up he was craving, backed up and took a breath. He smiled and said, “Shit guys when I said to fucking kill each other, I meant respectfully!”
The set as I said was everything and more: “Perseverance”, “I Will Be Heard”, “A Call for Blood”, and off of The Rise of Brutality “Tear it Down”, “Straight to Your Face”, “This Is Now”, and “Doomsayer.” The place was just constant wall-to-wall madness, and with songs like “Destroy Everything”, “In Ashes”, and “They Shall Reap” off of the self-titled released earlier this year, it’s understandable. They shared a great story about Slayer being the only band who helped them when they had all of their equipment stolen in Japan and then broke into “Ghosts of War” by Slayer, which is featured on their cover album For the Lions that debuted early in 2009.
I don’t like every band that came after Hatebreed and tried to be Hatebreed because it’s impossible. I’m not convinced you can come out with a more brutal yet increasingly positive band that has a positive impact on the youth of metal and the old crones like me. If I need a pep talk, if I need to remember who I am, all I need to do is put on Hatebreed and it’s summer, it’s sunny and I can lift cars over my head. I can’t wait for their return to New York; they always put on the best shows.
