Maryland Death Fest 2010 - Pre-Festival Report

Then we have Entombed, Obituary and Sodom who are all great additions to any fest, but aren’t making me jump out of my seat.  Entombed and Obituary were lazy additions if you ask me.  Sure, they’re classic and have tons of fans, but so does Cannibal Corpse.  This year, I’m much more interested in the “secondary” bands rather than the headliners.  Watain, Portal, Melechesh, Sinister, Captain Cleanoff, The Chasm, Necrophobic, Coffins and Rompeprop among others.  I also think it’s a big mistake having Nazxul play outside during the day.  There are several other head-scratchers concerning band placements, but I won’t get into that now.  I’ll wait until I see how it turns out.

If you read my report from last year, then you’ll notice that I was dead wrong on a few of my predictions, namely the setup and venue of this year’s fest.  Ok, Nostradamus I am not.  Not only did they not move the venue to a giant open-air stage setting ala Ozzfest, they added another outside stage in front of the Sonar and the bands will be alternating with nearly no break between them.  I’m not sure what to make of this, but we’ll just have to see and I have confidence that the organizers know what they’re doing.  Last year, the outside stage was a sort of last-minute thing and this time, they’ve been planning for it the whole way, so I anticipate everything to be handled extremely professionally.  Barring some thunderstorms, it should go off without a hitch.

This will be my fifth MDF in a row and has become my Christmas for the year.  We once again have a room within crawling distance and are actually attending the pre-show for the first time.  Birdflesh and General Surgery were too good to pass up.  Anyway, check back a few days after the fest for my complete report full of pictures and tales of drunken idiocy.  See everyone there!

Ok, it’s officially Maryland Deathfest week.  After another year, the wait is almost over, yet I’d be lying if I said that my anticipation was as high as it was this time last year.  It’s of course another assemblage of amazing bands, but there’s a lack of that one current heavyweight the size of Bolt Thrower from last year.  Granted, there really isn’t anyone of their size out there, so having similar expectations isn’t exactly fair.  And I did say current.  There are two reunions this year and while they’re pretty sizable in name, they haven’t done anything in a long time, let alone play live in front of a few thousand insane fans.  While the anticipation for Autopsy and Gorguts is high amongst their fans, they’d be lying if they said that they weren’t at least a little concerned at how rusty they might be.
