Preface: Doing these ranked year end lists is a bit of labor, a lot of fun, and sometimes a bit unfair it seems. Dealing with as many albums as released, trying to listen to as many possible and listen enough times in context against or with one another, and to then rank a finite number?
HONORABLE MENTION:
Ares Kingdom - Incendiary
Being a fan of folk, viking and pagan metal, 2010 was pretty slow-going for me the first 3 months of the year. As you can tell by my list, it definitely picked up as the year went on. This year saw me get into the "shoegaze" influenced black metal a bit, but as great as Alcest and some other bands are, I found myself liking Finnr's Cane, an almost unknown band in the genre, the most. Iron Maiden did the unthinkable and let me down with their new one, as did Orphaned Land. Still, when all is said and done and the year is almost at an end, 2010 turned out to be a great year. RIP RJD. And thank you.
There's not really much to say about this year's releases, other than the fact that there were so many really great albums it made it very difficult to put a top ten list together. Albums by Winterfylleth, October Tide, Triptykon, Lantlos and Alcest all could very easily have made it depending on the mood I was in. But, at the end of the day, the following list represents the albums that get the most play time at home and in the car.
