2011 was a great year for Folk/Viking and Pagan Metal. Some great new bands came onto the scene while other bands finally released albums after too long of a wait or even established bands in the genre released their best albums yet. Not too many letdowns this year... the new Arkona, while good, is probably my least fave of theirs and failed to even make this list. Same goes for the new Falkenbach. Don't get me wrong, both albums were great compared to others in the genre, but lacking when compared with their own previous albums. Entrails came out of nowhere and rekindled my old love for great Death Metal, and Primus even managed to impress me with their new album. We also lost a few great metal musicians this year. No loss was bigger for me than that of GWAR guitarist, Cory Smoot. He came into the band at a time when they needed a huge guitar-shaped boot in the ass. RIP Flattus.
2011 has been a great year for metal. I had a very hard time organizing this list and figuring out just what the top 10 would be. Havok's sophomore release Time is Up dominated my player this year and in my opinion is the best damn thrash record since Rust in Peace - bar none. This band is criminally unknown and doesn’t seem to be on many people's list which is one hell of a shame. Born of Osiris and Uneven Structure often get lumped in with the new wave of 'djent', but both bands rise high above the bar for that particular heading. Uneven Structure's Februus combines everything from ambient soundscapes to brutal metal into one hell of a concept record. I'll likely get crap for including Machine Head in my list, but what can I say... it's an incredibly written, played and produced album that I simply cannot stop listening to it. It's popular to hate on these guys but I'm just going to have to be unpopular here. The rest of the list shouldn't surprise many people as those albums have (rightly) received many accolades earlier in the year.
